got...tempeh?

Hi Janine-

my only tempeh preparation is not that creative. I saute it in olive oil,

with sea salt. I like the taste of it, and it's simple that way. I also

sauteed it last week with olive oil, sea salt, garlic powder, and kale. That

was yummy too!

There are some tempeh aficionados on this list who have way better ways of

doing it than I. :)

Hi Janine!

I usually cut my tempeh up into smaller than bite sized pieces and saute in lite

soy sauce and ginger - I combine this with veggies and brown rice - Yum!

Hi new friends :-)

As I figure out how to get enough vegetarian protein at each meal, I'm

giving tempeh another try. Anyone have any recipes they've tried that

have worked out? I read that if you find the taste of it kind of

bitter, then you should simmer it in broth or water first, then cook

with it. So...I simmered it first in water and then in vegetable

broth, then drizzled some tamari and lemon juice on top. Well, it was

better...but I'm still not loving it.

Quinoa as a side dish though, that I do love!

Thanks for the soup recipes and the incredible egg idea!

I did not like Tempeh at first a few years ago. I add it to home

made soups and use it as a " complementary protein " , feels like the

right thing to do.

I usually saute it, too. I like to get it a little brown - but I warn

you, it sucks up oil! Keep an eye on it, that it doesn't start

sticking.

I never cook it alone, always with a lot of vegetables. Had some

leftovers the other day, with onion and cabbage.

I've also seen recipes to simmer it in sauce, until the sauce is

mostly absorbed. Don't think I've tried that. That might be an option.

Simmering (I have done it in broth) or steaming it changed the texture

- makes it softer, less firm. I guess I like the firm texture!

There's also a tempeh recipe in the files. Just remembered it - I'd

tried and liked it when I was on the list before, then forgot about

it!

I bet you could find others with a search of the archives, too.

Hey there, Janine -

I like tempeh several ways. I usually cut it in cubes and steam (or

boil) it for about 15 minutes. I like the texture to be softened a

bit.

Then I'll do any of the following with it:

Add it to a Thai-style curry that contains coconut milk, red curry

paste, and a bunch of veggies;

Saute it in oil with ginger, soy sauce and sesame oil;

Slice in strips and saute it in oil until it's a bit brown and

crispy, then put it in a green salad;

Crumble it and add to tomato sauce.

Sometimes I simply slice it in 1/2 inch thick strips, steam for 15

minutes, and put it on bread or rice or quinoa with some hot sauce or

other sauce on top.

Hope you find some ways you like it! Cinzia

Hi Janine! Tempeh was one of the first things I asked about when I joined this

list :). I didn't care for tempeh the first few times I made it, but luckily

someone here suggested I try the garden vegetable variety. I did and it was

much more palatable in my opinion. Typically now I crumble it into a pan with

coconut oil and brown it and add it to a curry or sauce. I also made a reuban

sandwhich with it at JoEllen's suggestion. I used sliced tempeh, whole wheat

bread, swiss cheese, saurkraut, tomato slices and mayonaise, and then grilled it

all on my Foreman Grill. I thought it was terrific.

Thanks for the idea, Heather! I got the garden veg kind, marinated it

overnight, then grilled it in coconut oil...then made a sandwich with

my brown rice bread (I'm gluten intolerant) and for the first time I

could actually eat it! So, progress! I will try it again in a sort of

crumble as recommended, I think that would work even better, since the

bread I have isn't my favorite for sandwiches. Tempeh has so much

protein so I'm very motivated to keep on trying!

Janine, yay!!! So glad you could eat it! I feel the same way, it's so high in

protein, and I really wanted another protein source in my repertoire so I kept

trying too LOL
