Morning!

I was wondering if any of you ever tried putting beans in your shakes,

and if so what kind do you think is the best? I want to add beans to

the shake I make in the mornings that has chocolate almond milk in it.

Maybe a pinto bean would work best with that?

Maggie, now there is a neat thought. I am curious, are you adding beans for

protein, browns, or texture purpose? I've never added them, but pinto does

sound good with chocolate almond milk.

Hi Heather,

I'm doing it to make the shake have a more complete protein. Here is

what I plan to add to my shake tomorrow morning:

brown rice protein powder

baby oatmeal

pinto beans (frozen to make the shake colder)

strawberries (frozen)

banana (frozen)

chocolate almond milk

spirrulina (for B12)

cocoa powder

I'll let you know how the beans work out!

I'm interested too Maggie.

I don't often do shake, but when I do it's because I want to go running without

having to allow 3 hours for breakfast to settle.

Yet the basic shake is light for me. I can see trying beans if it works.

I realized that the canned beans I had contained a load of sodium, so

I skipped the beans today. I bought a package of raw pinto beans

and I plan to prepare them today for tomorrow's shake instead. I'll

let ya know how it goes!

Do let us know how it goes, Maggie. I'm very curious about the taste and

texture -- I've never thought of putting beans in my shake!

And FYI, there are some canned beans without salt. Look in your supermarket or

health food store. The brand I use is Eden Organic.

OK. The results are in! Shake ingredients were:

1/3c frozen pinto beans

4 frozen strawberries

1/2 frozen banana

1/4c baby oatmeal

3 TBSP rice protein powder

1 tsp spirulina

1 TBSP plain cocoa powder

chocolate rice milk (enough to cover ingredients, I prefer almond milk

but the store was out)

Results:

It made the shake a little firmer, with more of a peanut butter

texture, and with kind of like a mild roasted flavor. But other than

that I really didn't notice the addition of the pinto beans at all.

That's awesome!

You are thinking outside the box...or blender!

Very interesting!

You know, I just thought of times when I *have* had beans in a shake. It was

pre-RR, when I was enjoying these Taiwanese & Japanese smoothie-type drinks. My

favorite one was red bean. It was a little bit sweet but not much. The red

bean taste was very nice. I had completely forgotten about this until just now.

You've inspired me to try to make my own RR version...I think I'll get some

adzuki beans and see how that goes. Cinzia

Hmmm, mild roasted flavor sounds good, actually!

I have really gotten used to the beans this week. Yesterday and

today I had the shake with plain almond milk instead of chocolate, and

it really complimented the frozen pinto beans well, and made a nice

morning treat since it's getting warm and humid around here.

I want to play with the almond flavor and see what I can do to bring

it out more.

Next week I am going to try this:

plain almond milk

3 tbsp rice protein powder

3 tbsp frozen pinto beans

about 1/3c of baby oatmeal

3 tbsp silken tofu

1 frozen banana

1 tbsp flax oil

1 tsp spirrulina

and a drop of almond flavoring

In this case I am using the pinto beans as a brown.
