Guest guest
Hiyas Veggies : ) I have been reading about amino acid supplements, and I am a little confused. I found one that I assume is synthesized in a lab because it doesn't come from plant or animals. Anyway... I guess my question is, is a good quality amino acid supplement something that I could use in my shake instead of protein powder? Is the amino acid our only reason for ingesting protein? Any experience you have with this topic would be really helpful because this information is new to me! Thanks! Maggie
Guest guest
Hi Maggie, The idea of the protein powder in the shake is that it is a *food* not a supplement. The aminos are distributed in their natural form. And it is not a good idea to just take aminoes because you can overload the percentage of a given one and disturb the balance in your brain. kathleen On Jun 7, 2009, at 6:39 PM, Maggie Vining wrote: > Hiyas Veggies : ) > > I have been reading about amino acid supplements, and I am a little > confused. Guest guest
Hi Maggie! I'm far from an expert in nutrition! But I'll add my perspective if it is helpful at all. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, right? You need protein at each meal. How about you just focus on that. If you want to have a shake, perhaps at breakfast, why not make it as simple as possible and choose a shake mix that has a very simple list of ingredients. Have you checked out the radiant recovery website's store? Have you ever had breakfast without much protein at all? How did you feel? Did you ever have breakfast with a substantial amount of protein? How did you feel? For me, the difference is very, very illuminating. Breakfast that is just toast? I'm unable to focus shortly after. I am weak, dizzy. Breakfast with eggs and whole grain toast? I'm singing, clear, in balance, energized. Breakfast with eggs, cheese, and oatmeal? There's no stopping me--I am very strong and happy. I feel like I should feel, if that makes sense, lol! Hope this helps, Maggie! Janine On Jun 7, 2009, at 5:39 PM, Maggie Vining wrote: > > > Hiyas Veggies : ) > > I have been reading about amino acid supplements, and I am a little > confused. Guest guest
Ok good points! I ask because I wonder if as a vegan I get the right amounts of amino acids in the types of protiens that I eat. I enjoy eating beans, tofu, nuts, seitan, mycoprotein, and I use plain rice protein powder in my shakes every morning. Along with that I have bean burrito. If I can get all the right amino acids through food that is preferable for sure! I feel pretty good, as long as I don't eat a lot of tofu or other soy based foods, so I guess that is what matters, but I just became concerned when I read the information about amino acids. Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Maggie I don't know if this will help, but I found it reassuring. From Potatoes Not Prozac, 2008 edition, p128: 'There are some long-standing myths about the inadequacy of plant proteins and about the need for eating plant proteins that complement each other at the same meal. These beliefs are no longer considered valid. Current thinking suggests that if you are eating enough protein-containing foods and getting an adequate amount of total protein, you are very likely meeting your body's need for complete amino acids.'
