Liquid smoke is a liquid that gives hickory-smoke

flavor to foods. It comes in a bottle and where I

live it's found near tabasco sauces and marinades. I

started using it when it was called for in a bean

recipe and I really like the flavor it adds.

It's very hard to find liquid smoke outside of the US.

A tbsp of fake bacon bits adds a nice smokey taste if

liquid smoke can't be found.

How much red pepper? It's not listed in the

ingredients.

Split Pea soup is something I would never, ever eat.

I avoided peas in general as much as possible. I am

slowly changing my ways and just the other day I had a

sample of vegan split pea soup at Trader Joe's (at

their taste station) and liked it, to my amazement.

Diane, did anyone get back to you on this? I don't have an answer myself, but I

am thinking that some of the vegetarian recipe websites out there might have

some good ones!

Diane

I was going to reply at the time, but my recipe only involves cooking the peas

with carrots & a leek or two & then blitzing the results. You can add cumin or

any other spice you like at the beginning as you gently saute the leek.
