I try really hard to pack my lunch for work during the week but sometimes it

just doesn't work out. Any suggestions for takeout lunches that are vegetarian

friendly and high protein? I've tried the veggie patty at subway which I like

and the veggie burger at BK which is okay (microwaved and on white bread so not

ideal!). I get very frustrated sometimes trying to find somwhere to eat lunch

that fits my lifestyle. Any suggestions would be very appreciated!

Hi Caroline, I am pretty lucky in that I live in an area with vast choices for

take out. I have a salad place that you can chose your toppings that include 3

kinds of beans, hard boiled eggs, tofu, and 6 kinds of cheese. I just bring my

own brown. There is an asian place that does brown rice, steamed veggies and

tofu with no sauce that I like. I have an indian place near my work that has

fabulous vegetarian food, I just bring my own brown (or I can get these great

microwavable brown rice packs at the grocery store). There is a vegetarian

restaurant that just started serving brown rice tortillas so I've done tofu and

veggie wraps, there. Not sure what your area is like though--I think my choices

might be more rare.

Maybe we can help you brain storm some ideas from the places you have near you?

I agree that browns are usually the bigger challenge than protein. My

on-the-road meals are Subway sandwiches (I get extra-extra cheese), bean

burritos, or pizza, but the burritos and pizza involve whites. At Mexican food

places, I'll sometimes ask for bean tacos, or just get a side of beans and a

couple of corn tortillas.

I've also picked up brown rice from a Pick Up Stix (chain restaurant, but

they're not everywhere) and combined it with beans from a Mexican restaurant

(like La Salsa or Baja Fresh). Indian food would be great too, if they have (or

you bring) brown rice.

Where I work there aren't great takeout options.  I could get a baked potato or

an omelette, or buy bits from a convenience store.

One idea I have for you is to leave emergency rations AT work.

I have a couple of pouches of brown rice in my locker, a pouch of mutta paneer

(Indian cheese curry), one of chick pea chilli, another of dahl.

I also have a pack of w'ml pitta breads and tins of green beans and spinach.
