I used to make oat milk all the time. I *think* the ratio was

4 cups water to 1 cup dry oats (any kind). Blend until creamy.

Strain, if desired. I liked the thicker texture of not bothering.

Store in glass mason jar in fridge and consume within three days,

lest it get " slimy " . :P

p.s. - Maybe a touch of vanilla and/or cinnamon to flavor.

Has anyone tried and even made oat milk or other grain milks? I love soy

and rice milk. I'd like more variety, though.

Thanks!

Yep. I've been making various " milks " for years, and it's always (for

me, anyway), 1 cup of " stuff " (stuff = raw nuts, raw oats, cooked

grains, raw bananas, cooked beans) and 4 cups of water.

Same here, especially with cashew milk. Yum.

:-) The only exception to that for my " milk " recipes is banana milk,

which needs to be used right away.

Oh dear. I hope I did not make anyone upset with my comment! I go

between the radiant step one and this group. I looked over the messages and

realized some of you on here do eat meat. I am glad you are here to learn more

about living vegetarian, the animals thank you for it! :)

I am here to read and learn about veg choices others have made on this

program, because in the books (I just finished them all, whew!) and these

groups, it seems most choices for protein are meat or dairy or eggs, and I

want to stay away from animal products, and find good, healthy alternatives

that still keep me on the program.

Thank you for all of your recommendations!

Anyone else have an oat milk w/o so much sugar added?

Hi Maria,

Thanks for sharing how important vegetarianism is to you. It is to me too.

Oat milk doesn't work the same as oats do on your blood sugar, so it can't

" replace " them. I don't have great language for it, but I think of browns

as giving our bodies something to chew on for a while. So hang onto the

real oats. :-)

If you are positive there are no added sugars in the oat milk, then the

19g could just be naturally occurring sugars. Most foods have some natural

sugars, which is why reading the sugar count doesn't usually help us too much

(but it can be an important clue). BUT...the soy milk I use has 2g of

sugar in a cup. So 19g sounds like a lot of sugar for a product with no added

sugar, and I wonder if there's something sugary (but hidden) in the

ingredients.

That having been said, I don't think you need to worry too much about

sugar until you are on step 6, but maybe this isn't the time to be concerned

about that.

Can't help you with the George's powder, but I'm sure someone can!

Cheers,

Sharon

Hello!

I want to tell you all how happy I am to be here in this vegetarian group.

It is good to know fellow vegetarians/ vegans are in this with me. I feel

safe here, knowing you all stay away from animals as food. :)

My question this morning is about oat milk. I had it in my shake this

morning, and it says it has 19g of sugar, but no sugar listed. Just curious

about that. Can I use the oat milk instead of oats in the shake?

Does George's protein powder have a flavor? I am not too keen on the one I

purchased. What is the difference between the 2 George's powders?

Thank you all so very much,

I am working on being a vegetarian. I go stretches where I'm

HI Maria,

I felt excited with I read your email about the oat milk. When I

started making our oat milk, I was determined to

keep at it until I found the recipe that worked. It's actually pretty

easy to make, but my husband prefers the

texture of soy milk, so now I make that.

I looked at the nutritional information for Pacific oat milk online

and found that it has 19 grams of sugars while

homemade has only about 5. I'm wondering if the extra sugars/carbs are

in the thickeners they use since

I didn't see anything like looked like a sugar.

George's Original has the vitamins and complex carb (oatmeal) in it.

It makes breakfast easy since everything

is there. However it is made with soy and so not good for children.

Restore is plain whey powder. It can be

" dolled " up in lots of ways or it can " doll " up a dish to add extra

protein. Just remember to take a multi vitamin

if you use it for your shake.

I really like the " flavor " of George's original and so does my

husband. I " " flavor because it's rather on the

neutral side-not icky, not sweet. I would mix and drink it plain.

Hubby likes to play with vanilla, pineapple,

orange, etc. I wanted a no brainer for breakfast.

Hope that is helpful, Gina in IN

I was vegetarian until my mom moved in. She's an ardent meat eater, so

is my now

husband. Our compromise is that at least 95% of the meat must come

from the

farmer's market. That way I know the farmers, how the animals were

raised, etc.

They are being slowly transitioned to a vegetarian and sometimes vegan

diet.

It's okay with Paolo. As long as it's not peppermint tea and the food

doesn't

have rhubarb in it, he doesn't see what there is to complain about.

That's

just one of the reasons I married him. (grin)

Cynthia, thanks for the tip on hemp seeds. I'll see if our store can

get them in.

You can use oatmilk in your shake, but still have a brown with it.

Kathleen,

So I would have oatmeal in the shake too? Even if I was using George's?

Thank you Gina, I need to find a protein powder for my children and I to

have together. I can't imagine doing 2 shakes one after the other. LOL!

Hope that is helpful, Gina in IN

you are welcome, gina. also thanks for sharing your story. i too have been

fortunate enough to find local, organically and naturally grown foods...and

well, here on vancouver island there are more and more sustainable, sane, and

healthful choices. this online group is great. my hand is still not right and

am heading to the hand surgeon now to see what's happening.... thus the

primitive typing...

maria, just to say i am glad you are here. i am new at online groups, and

talking about oat milk: that is something i want to try.

Thanks, Maria, I'll look out for that one. I just picked up the new

one by Alicia Silverstone and got some great ideas for one dish

meals...but I'd have to have a shake on the side because not enough

protein in any entree for me...but that's ok, it is just nice to get

inspiration.

Hi Rick,

I went into this thread and saw your original inquiry. Somehow I missed it! When

I make oat milk, I use a soy milk make which I purchased through the Radiant

Store. The oat groats get soaked overnight. Then they go through three grind

only rounds (no heat). You could do the same thing with a blender and just

strain the pulp. The pulp is then great to cook a bit and eat for breakfast.

I had tried a couple of recipes from the internet and this is what I like best.

Let me know what your experiments produce-might just like that one better.
