Meat Eating's Effect on the Environment

Is your plate harming the planet?

Eating meat leaves behind an environmental toll that generations to come

will be forced to pay.

Land:

Of all agricultural land in the U.S., 87 percent is used to raise animals

for food - that's 45 percent of the total land mass in the U.S.

Water:

More than half of all the water consumed in the U.S. for all purposes is

used to raise animals for food. It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce

a pound of meat, but only 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat. A totally

vegetarian diet requires 300 gallons of water per day, while a meat-eating

diet requires more than 4,000 gallons of water per day.

Pollution:

Raising animals for food causes more water pollution in the U.S. than any

other industry because animals raised for food produce 130 times the

excrement of the entire human population - 87,000 pounds per second! Much

of the waste from factory farms and slaughterhouses flows into streams and

rivers, contaminating water sources.

Energy:

Of all raw materials and fossil fuels used in the U.S., more than one-third

is used to raise animals for food. Producing a single hamburger patty takes

enough fossil fuel to drive a small car 20 miles and enough water for 17

showers.

Deforestation:

Each vegetarian saves an acre of trees every year! More than 260 million

acres of U.S. forest have been cleared to grow crops to feed animals raised

for meat, and another acre of trees disappears every eight seconds. The

tropical rain forests are also being destroyed to create grazing land for

cattle. Fifty-five square feet of rain forest may be razed to produce just

one quarter-pound burger.

Resources:

In the U.S., animals raised for food are fed more than 80 percent of the

corn we grow and more than 95 percent of the oats. The world's cattle alone

consume a quantity of food equal to the caloric needs of 8.7 billion

people - more than the entire human population on Earth.

May I ask why you are lecturing vegans? I, for one, am part of this group for the purpose of sharing recipes and crock pot ideas based on veganism...not to be lectured like a schoolchild. Wouldn't your efforts be put to greater use on lists designed for sharing political ideas, or with groups of people who eat meat? Just a thought....

P.S. I don't believe Cheri has laid down ground rules prohibiting posts of this nature, so I'm sure you are not in violation of anything, B-U-T this was not the spirit in which this list was formed! Namaste.

In a way I don't feel right about 'banning' something I basically agree with, but yeah, I joined this list because I wanted to get some good meatless crockpot recipes. I'd vote for restricting the list to that.

I was just posting it so that vegans would have one more thing to tell

meat-eaters who ask why they are vegan. Sorry you didn't like it.

Glitter:

Guess I don't need to tell you how I feel about the subject! It's not that I disagree with the message, but there is a time and place for everything, and IMHO, this is not one of them. There are plenty of lists designed for politics, and like you, Cherrie, I get 5 copies of everything. Anyway...I'm sure Jerry did not mean to be disrespectful, but sometimes vegans are a little overzealous (me included) and plaster our message everywhere, much to everyone's annoyance. Have a nice day, folks!

I agree that we don't need these posts. I don't think anyone in this (or any other vegetarian list) needs to be "converted". We're all here because this is how we live and eat already.

jeremy, i understand your wanting to help...but like it has been stated, this is primarily a cooking list and we'd like to keep it that way!!! most of us already know these things anyway, and there are many lists out there that really utilize these sorts of posts! i wish you luck in your endeavors, and i really don't want to ban you from the list! so how about this, we all agree that these sort of posts should remain off of this particular list?

thanks!

Well, my reply may not count for much, but here goes. I honestly decided to become a vegan based on health issues. This is not to say that I am not concerned with animal rights--I am. But no matter how we feel about that issue, there will ALWAYS be humans that feel they need meat ( a totally disgusting thought by the way). I do not feel that it is something worth causing war over. We have enough of that already! My experience has taught me that most people learn by example and by kind and gentle ways--not by meanness and forceful ideas. I find that I can convert people simply by letting they taste some of the types of food that I eat. If I told them all these awful facts about animal abuse, they would shut me out and not hear a word I said. That is quite simply the way humans are. They don't want to hear about the torture that animals go through for becoming our food, nor do they want to hear about how we get feathers for our beds and pillows (a most horrible experience for the poor creatures involved), or how deadly it is for animals AND humans to make leather! But if we show they how good our food tastes and how much better they will feel, they will choose our way. In light of these thoughts, we should keep our posts here to do with crockpot cooking as the board was designed to do. Anything more will simply turn possible converts away.
