slow cooker vs. crockpot

Just yesterday I pulled my significant other's hand-me-down slow cooker

out of the cupboard, only to discover that it's not the traditional

crockpot but instead has a ceramic pot that sits on, not in, a heating

unit. According to both crockpot cookbooks I've read, this style doesn't

work very well, but unless I buy a new crockpot, it's what I've got. Does

anyone have one of these? Any recipes/suggestions?

I used to have one of these and had no significant problems using it as a slow cooker. I think the only big difference (besides the ceramic pot being on top of the heating element) was that there were 5 heat settings instead of the traditional 2.

So try it out! :-)

Like I said, it sits on top of the heating unit instead of inside it

(which is what I think of when I think " crockpot " ). When I get home this

evening I can look up the brand name.

Thanks for the encouragement! I found an enchilada casserole I want to

try, and rice pudding, mmm... I'd like to make baked beans and similar

but my housemates voted me down-- " Those are for winter, it's 90 degrees

outside! "

I think I already asked this but...are there really good crockpot

cookbooks out there? Should I just read whatever the library's got, or is

there one that's worth buying?
