Guest guest
I have been lacto-vegetarian for about 2 months and I am now interested in becoming totally vegan. There is one problem however, I have an extremely severe allergy to legumes (i.e. peanuts, peas, beans, alfalfa, and soy derivatives-including soybean oil.) Yes, I have to carry the " epi-pen " around. I was wondering if there was a way for me to get my recommended ~80+ grams of protein per day and still be vegan? Could someone possibly give me some recommendations for alternatives to legume products that would supply the 9 essential amino acids required. Guest guest
Who told you that you needed 80 grams of protien a day. The norm for adults, male or female, I believe is 56. The RDA, usually higher than needed is 63 for women, 50 for men. Over 70 is considered dangerous to our health. Look into fresh nuts ... true nuts, not the peanut. I also use rice proiten as one of my breakfast drink alternates. I am not sure, but they must also make concentrated protiens from nuts such as the almond or wallnut. Check out your 'search' engine. Try your local health food grocery store .. read the labels ... ask the folks that work in their food supplement area. Guest guest
Cherry: Great list. There are many sites that will help: http://www.18.waisays.com/ has a very similar list I was about to post (you beat me to it) but they also have a " quality of protein " list also. What concerned me in their forst paragraph was a comment on a little animal was good also. That raises a " flag " to me anyway. I question the " home source " of the site. If it is gov't funded or controlled by certain orgs who's lobies also seem to control what our gov't lets us find out.. In reading further, this does not seem to be the case here however. If you had a kidney condition rather than allergies, you would be asked to avoid legumes too because they provide way more protein that we really need. The reality is, if you eat enough calories of a variety of whole plant foods, you get all the protein you need. I'd recommend that you get hold of a copy of The McDougall Plan by Dr. John McDougall, in which there is a detailed chapter about protein, and how overblown the concern about " getting enough " is. You may be able to borrow a copy from you local library. He has a website too www.drmcdougall.com Deborah
