I felt it was worth filing away as a resource .... thought you might think so also " A " Message from " ListMom " Neris Dear friends, Recently, I have been receiving several well-intentioned messages containing virus hoaxes and other phoney things (like missing children who were found a year or more ago, etc.) I believe many folks do not know they are perpetrating such hoaxes. I check out every thing before I allow it to be posted. We all receive such mailings, and yes, we sometimes send them on, believing we are doing a good deed. The only way to stop this nonsense is to NOT send them unless we CHECK them out and find they are true. So how do we handle informing people about them? First, save these addresses: http://www.snopes.com http://urbanlegends.miningco.com/ http://www.kumite.com/myths/http://www.chekware.com/hoax/index.htm http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/ http://www.symantec.com/avcenter This is a link to a Virus Encyclopedia. It list every virtual know n virus and what it looks like, what to watch out for and what to do if you get one. Lists them A-Z plus recently added ones. Might be a good thing to keep on hand IN CASE! http://www.cai.com/virusinfo/encyclopedia/ They are the best sites for you to debunk the myths. Secondly, an easy and safe way to inform the person who sent you the hoax is the following paragraph: " For those who regularly get hoax virus warnings you may find the services of Hoaxkill http://www.hoaxkill.com of use. When you get a hoax virus warning you simply forward it to axkill and they send a polite message out to the one who sent it explaining its a hoax and why they should not forward it on. They also keep a database of whom they have emailed, to prevent the individual receiving several messages. " I suggest you keep this information handy, perhaps in an e-mail file, where you can call it up - and with all the e-mail going on these days, that could be frequently! <g> You have my promise that I will try my best to NOT permit any kind of hoax to be posted here.
