Guest guest
Kelley, You are the first one say you're a solar cook too. I joined awhile ago and was surprized other solar cookers hadn't joined by now. My neighbors thought it inventive and humorous to see my solar oven in the front yard this past year. I want to master crockpoting and solar cooking. So far I still mainly do plain beans that get used for various recipes and salads. I haven't taken the time to sit down and plan a couple meals yet. Guest guest
Jenni, Camping is where I learned and started. I was at a Rainbow Family of Light national gathering and saw several solar ovens working. Mini lessons were set up and I made my first oven. I continued on using it while camping for another couple of weeks. If you have room in your vehicle to carry an oven then I'd say it's more convenient than campfire. No soot to clean off of everything, no wood to gather, no need to be present while oven is cooking, not a fire hazard and fun to watch people looking at your oven. Solar oven's work best on clear, sunny days, regardless of the whether it's winter or summer. The box is insulated to capture heat for cooking. Wind, humity and cloudy days are not good solar cooking days. Example cookies that take about 15 minutes in a regular oven, take about 30 minutes in a solar oven on a clear day or an hour or two at the beach [due to humity]. Cooking times are approximately 10a-6p in the summer and 11a-2p in the winter. So you can't use every crockpot recipe in a solar oven. You gotta to have enough cooking time. If a recipe needs more time to cook, I've split the cooking across 2 days without problem. Just put in frig at sunset and put it back in the oven in the morning. That's how I deal with unexpected high winds, rain, haze. Or just put it a regular oven to finish cooking. Jenni if your balcony is facing south then you can do it no problem. Otherwise, it's gonna be tricky due to too much shade. I have a very cranky 2yr old at my feet. Gotta go for now.
