Amirah's testimonial: saving money on groceries

Jenni,

In 1992, I started reading Amy Dacyczyn's books

" The Tighwad Gazette " series I-III. She explains

how to create and use a " price book " and

" shopping closet " for great savings.

I thought that was a brilliant idea and started

to following her shopping plan.

www.oganizedhome.com posted Amy's price book plan

and even offers free forms for setting up your

own price book.

One example of how I use her plan. A year ago in

September Organic whole peeled tomates [in lined

cans] were on sale for 33c/14.5 oz. can. Since

I had been tracking prices of this item for a

long time in my price book I knew it was an

awesome deal and bought 144 cans and another 144

cans of organic tomato sauce.

Storage of such items is what the " shopping

closet " is for. Shopping closet is not your

pantry. It's where you keep those 20 something

toothbrushes, shampoos, toothpastes, aspirin,

dishwashing liquid, stain remover, etc.... you

bought with coupons AND ON SALE for maximum

savings.

I do the same bulk buying when organic

fruit-sweetned jams, organic natural peanut or

almond butter and organic spaghetti sauce go on

sale.

If the co-op [a mail order company] has a better

price then my local store I find 2-4 moms to go

in on a purchase with me since co-op only sells

in bulk. For example, splitting a 25 lb bag of

steel-cut oats, 50 lb bag of organic soy beans,

10 lb bag of organic unshelled black walnuts or

almonds, 5 lb bag of organic flaxseeds are some

of what I've done.

Knowing how often I go through a perishable item

is also tracked so I can figure out what quantity

to buy. Rancid peanutbutter, etc. is no bargain

at any price.

Does this help? I don't even know if I am making

sense. I am really sleepy today.

I am a regular reader, but haven't been a good

contributor to this group. I am a SAHM with a 2

yr ds. My hip was dislocated at my ds's birth.

I struggle with getting just basic life stuff

done - pain dictates how much I can do in a day.

Let me know if you want more. Dh and I are super

frugal so living on just his income doesn't mess

with our long term financial goals.

Meanwhile, while I am a SAHM I am studing vegan

nutrition and cooking. Dh and I have been

ovo-lacto vegs for over 9 years.

For years I've been giving these books as wedding presents. Always greatly

appreciated. I hear they come in one volume now, too.

I couldn't be able to survive without mine.

Unfortunately, this link doesn't work. Maybe later on it'll be up, but it's

not right now.

It hates me! I got to the site, even got to the page about price books, but

when I click to show the price book page in printable format, I get the

placeholder for the graphic and the red X. There's something askew with the

htm coding on the page. ARGH!

Does it work for anyone?

Folks: Your incouraging a skam ... me too by continuing this ongoing posting. This person is involved with some varietion on an MLM, Network Marketing "We'er the greatest thing to happen to man (woman)kind" group geared to sell you the proverbia; Brooklyn Bridge. In Network Marketing, over 90% of the profits are made by less than 10% of those involved. For the most part you ability to make money is how good a sales person you are and how good the marketing pros were that put together the sales package. The concept is gto make it sound sooooooo good that you will feel you are missing out on the greatest opportunity of your life.

I am sure that if they posted the "testimonials of 90% of those that have joined this ... well call it what you will ...... you will see a totally different picture of this "opportunity" ..... OH! What am I saying ..... they are looking to sell this concept arn't they ?? Save your money, Save your time, Save a lot of headaches. Even with the cupon for food organizations I have had "knock at my door" ... literially or figuratively ... for me anyway it does not work. This holds true for the ligitamate approach groups also. For this to have any chance of working for you you have to want to eat and/or use the types of foods and products that those that do not care about their health use. The processed foods, name brands, even brands as poor as Healthy Ch .... oh ... should not mention a brand. You have to want food packaged in aluminum, full of partially hydroginated oils, refined sugars, color dyes, and the like. Plus, none are really geared to the vegetarian ... especially since most are also health concious. But this is my opinion. Do as you will, and you will. I just want you to enter this with open eyes as well as an open pocketbook. A,

Price books are tailored to your shopping needs.

There's no scam about it. It's a shopping

technique.

I gave an example, of organic canned tomatoes in

lined cans, organic apple sauce. Those are

healthful items to stock in your pantry.

My latest price book success story was yesterday.

I bought 9 1-lb tubs of Pete's organic tofu,

med/hard for 10cents each. I knew from my price

book that the best price was 50-99 cents for

organic tofu on sale. It near it's expiration

so it was frozen. So I asked the store manager

if he sold for 10 cent each, I'd take it all.

This is easy to negotiate, stores want to clear

products BEFORE expiration.

Anyone have crockpot recipe that includes tofu?

I've only used it in stir-fry's.

That's my point.

I am a health nut.

I do not eat canned anything. Fresh organic vegies.

fresh foods, wholegrain flours, nothing with added

salt (as in anything packaged for the most part),

nothing with additives of any kind, color dyes, etc.

Cupons are for the non-selective shopper and one who

believes only in brand names.

Yes, you do have a lot of tofu to use up.

I heard a nice crockpot recipe for it (though I suppose you could do it on

the stove). Take a jar of your favourite spaghetti sauce (or your own

homemade sauce) and cut up a block of tofu. Throw it all inthe corckpot

and crok on low all day.. I've had cut up tofu in spaghetti sauce and it is

delicious!

Mmmm, that sounds delicious! I just made a huge batch of sauce last night and now I've got something to do with it and my tofu :) Thanks for the idea.

Tofu can be used in a multitude of ways. I personally never buy the shelfed versions (not refrigerated), opting for any of several brands of refridgerated ones. Each brand has a different consistancy and a variation on the basic flavor,

Amonst the different things I make here:

Scrambled Tofu

For company that eats eggs, Tofu stuffed omletts with variations on the sauteed vegies inserted with the tofu blend.

On the italian side ..... Tofu & rice-parmagan (has casseen) Angel-hair 'Alfredo'; Tofu mannacotte, linguini with a sauce of vegies, hot chili & tofu

On the Asian side ... the list here is long ... 90%+ of my meals are Asian, usually Thai. Tofu replaces any of the variations on 'Dead Animal', and the recipee is modiified to 'whole food style' / fried-oil free cooking. Some are sauteed, some baked and some steamed.

I can go on, as the uses for tofu are unending. basically ... take your favorite meat or seafood recipe ... replace the dean animal with firm tofu (put in near the end .. & /or marinated in the sauce while the longer items are cooking when sauteeing. Not necessary when baking.).
