Well done on your decision.

I suggest Joanne Stepaniak's books on Veganism, makes a good read. I'm a

teenager in denial (20 LOL), but I went vegan when I was 19, does that

count? Veggie since seven is impressive! I was only veggie since 17.

Gelatine is always found of the negatives of films as well as the photo

prints. In short you'll never get away from all animal product, as long as

they are cheap because people choose to munch on animals, they'll be used.

I draw the line at eating and wearing. Not sure about matches, how about a

lighter? Dino fuel!

New vegan

Hi everyone,

I have turned vegan in the last couple of months having being thinking about

it for sometime, after being veggie since I was seven. Are there any teenage

vegans out there?

Can anyone help me, I've heard that there is sometimes, (or maybe always)

geletine and the like used to make matches and to stick photographic film

together. Is this true? If so are there any brands that don't?

What about clothes and dyes tested on animals, is there anyway of knowing or

a web site which sells desent clothes on line?

Thankyou, Anne Grainger

All Photographic film contains gelatine..so the best thing is to buy a

digital camera...or better still a cheep video camera..

Unfortunately any film you see at the Cinima has been printed on a Gelatine

film...I have looked into this as I am a film maker and there does not seem

to be any alternative other than DIGI-BETA which is a high resolution format

used for T.V.

It won`t give the same colour range or depth as film, and you would have a

hard job getting a cinema to show it.

I decided to work with video rather than film. I don`t go or care too much

for modern cinema.

fraggle,Are you sure? Bud isn't okay, according to my list (I think). Almost all Lagers aren't. Do you have some sort of list? Or have you contacted all the breweries? It'd be good if you could forward that list.

New Vegan

Hi Angie

Thanks for welcoming me to the list! I live in Devon in England. No, I don't know any vegetarians living near me, let alone vegans. I am in a world on my own. Thank goodness I found you guys! I am so pleased that I have joined you all and look forward to hearing from you all.

My first concern right now is that I need to lose about a stone in weight, that's all. Any advice? Perhaps I should exercise more, but I was advised that as a vegan I am on a sort of "diet" anyway as I don't eat red meat, chocolates and cheese, so I shouldn't try and cut any more foods out. That's very true. How do you all manage keeping the weight down? Lots of exercise, or just pure luck?!

I'd appreciate some help on this one. Many thanks everyone!!!!!!

Take care.

Wow, I thought I was the only overweight Vegan there was...how wonderful...I

was doing quite well losing weight, well..toning up then I became pregnant

again..anyway the best thing is to excersize at least half an hour a day..I

have one of those excersize videos (argh!) it`s really helped me become

motovated though and does work.

Have you also tried cutting down on bread..I find I eat a lot of

bread...also if you fry any of your food try not to, boil or grill it

instead...all obviouse stuff I`m afraid, theres no magical plan...you just

need to excersize and have determination.

I was about 3 stone overweight, started Weight Watchers in September

(their points system works fine for vegans in fact), did really well,

lost 3 stone in 4 months, and then promptly got pregnant with my

third child so at least a stone of the weight is back on now, just in

the first 3 months! This was definitely a surprise pregnancy.

I overeat more than ever now, mostly because it is the thing that

keeps off the pregnancy sickness!

I think that getting to a healthy weight had an effect of increasing

my fertility (I've heard of this before, but didn't expect it to

happen to me).

I lost a lot of wieght when one of my friends died, and a lot more by

drinking so much that I was too hung over to eat anything (about a stone and

a half, I think). Obviously I don't recommend that! But I lost about another

stone and kept it off by walking about three miles a day, and taking soup to

work - soup is fantastic because it's filling, and one like spicy lentil is

low-calorie but full of flavour, plus even in all but very hot weather it's

kind of comforting.

Fruit teas are good too, plus small amounts of food with a lot of strong

flavours like garlic and mustard (in George Orwell's 'Down and Out in Paris

and London', he cites rubbing bread with a clove of garlic as a good trick

to make you think you've eaten a more than you have, because the flavour

lingers).

Where abouts in Devon do you live ? I spent a good few years as a vegan in

Devon. I lived outside of Plymouth, which isn't too bad if you're vegan.

Totnes is also a bit of a mecca for anything v*gan, I never had much trouble

eating around there.

I come from Exeter but now live in Torquay. Yes, you're right about Totnes.

It is a haven if you are v*gan. I love it there!!! Exeter has a great

restaurant too called Herbies. It is always busy there!!! I have been to

Cornwall today to the Eden Project (fabulous!) and came back through

Plymouth. Know the area well!!!

Hello Jane,

I became I vegan in October and actually gained a little weight. I have lost about twenty pounds since then and found that watching portions, watchin fat when i fry foods, and also watch the fat content in sauces. I was lucky enough to have roomates who are really supportive and they purchased a low fat vegetarian cook book with many vegan recipies for me. I also eat tons of raw fruits and veggies in salads and for snacks, they're packed with nutrients and fill you up.

I have also been on an exercise program involving biking, running and weight training. I'm healthier than I've ever been before. My doctor even commented that my blood pressure is extremely low compared to the rest of my famil both my parents and grandparents have high blood pressure and my father and grandmother are currently under close observation. My father almost had a stroke in november and his doctor recomened cutting way back on meat and dairy (he was told to lay off the eggs years ago).

As you can tell i'm pretty much the only vegan I know (i know of one other on my college campus.)

But, I am glad that my doctor respects my choice and has praised me and told my family that my ideas might save my life when i'm older.

Best of luck,

Where is Plants for a Future?????? I went to the Eden Project in Cornwall

yesterday. Is that what you mean? It was fantastic!!! I would recommend

it to anyone, especially if you are interested in the environment. The

tropical biome was 31 degrees and very humid. A fine mist was released

every few minutes and I had to take my coat off and roll up my sleeves. My

husband's glasses steamed up! The tropical plants and trees (especially the

near-extinction ones) were a real treat! A must for all world loving

vegans!

Hope that's what you meant by Plants for a Future.

After 3 days camping out in paignton me and my little family decided to pop

in on The Eden Project on the way home, just to have a nosey, this was when

it was still in the process of being built.

People were visiting the site to see how it was been constructed etc...we

did`nt go in as we were skint and it was very expensive...anyway they tried

to charge me for wanting to use their loo!!!...sod off!.

Anyway are plants for the future those hideous plastic plants that stand on

the path to the entrance of The Eden Project?.

Thanks so much for posting this message Erin. That's really inspirational. I noticed that once before when I tried to become a vegan my weight increased a bit. It dropped, but when I became a vegan recently it did it again. I put it down to fluid retention or something like that!!! I have been given some great advice on exercise and I have taken up aerobics which is my favourite! I shall also watch my portions. I do love fruit and vegetables and salads, and certainly with the summer approaching I shall be having more salads! I have just seen a recipe on TV today on the Wellbeing Channel which I am going to try tonight - mixed baked aubergines and baked peppers with tahini, fresh garlic and lime juice in a wrap. Apparently its very low fat and very tasty and nutritious! If anyone wants to know what to do then let me know. It's so easy and it looked great!!!!!!

That's great about your blood pressure! I once had blood pressure that was too high for someone of my age, so being a vegan has lots of great health benefits as well as helping to stop this unkind world which we live in where people inflict cruetly on animals.

Thanks for your advice and support Erin!

The compassionate cook by PETA is really great, I use it constantly. How it all vegan is another good one, especially because it has lots of info when you're new to it. An ingredient list book like animal ingredients a-z is also great to help you find out more about the ingredients that are hard to decipher. There are recipes at the coolvegan website too. Welcome to the list and I hope this helps out! :)

You can also just go to your local bookstore (such as Borders) and look at their cookbooks, which are usually sorted with a special diet style category where you will find vegetarian and vegan books. I think my favorites are Vegan Vittles and Compassionate Cook.
