Ditto for me. Of course I support animal rights, but in their proper

place, and not where their posts are off-topic, and so many that they become

a public nuisance.

On my own lists, I have had to both ban and such senders, since

if I do not ban them, they just re and start all over again. As

it is they change their email address, and I have to keep banning what is

undoubtedly the same person or people.

animal rights

I believe animals have a right to be treated fairly and with respect,

that's partly why I became a vegetarian. BUT I am on this list for

VEGETARIAN RECIPES, not to discuss political issues or to find ways to

be more active in protecting them. This is not the place for those

discussions.

I think the effort to protect animals is great, I think what you do is

wonderful, but please DO NOT post so many messages unrelated to

vegetarian COOKING on this list.

If everyone else does not mind these postings, and wish them to

continue, I will .

Thanks

Carrie

Re: Ashland anyone?

Assuming I can get the time off from work, I will take 2 1/2 weeks and go to

Ashland and then the raw food festival, then either to the Strawberry Music

festival or Burning Man (haven't decided on which).

-Tim

Yea Attila and Tim! Tim, tell us more about the Strawberry Music Festival.

Is it in the " neighborhood " of Ashland and/or Portland? When is it? What is

it? Where is it?

:-)

The Strawberry Music festival takes place at Camp Mather, Yosemite, California

(450 miles SE of Ashland). It happens twice a year on Labor Day and Memorial

Day weekends. I've actually never been, so I can't tell you much about it.

My cousin invited me to go with him and that is how I found out about it. The

festival web site is http://www.strawberrymusic.com. I just discovered that

tickets are sold out as of today, but there is a possibility of buying them

from people wanting to sell their tickets through the unofficial ticket

exchange web site http://phorums.freeradio.com.

QOTW: What do you like for a Pick-Me-Up?

Hi everyone:

I had to think really hard about what I like for a pick-me-up. I like

so many things! For the most part I like to treat myself daily to a

three pieces of dried fruit... prunes, apricots especially, dates or

figs. Although high in natural sugars, these little treats satisfy my

"sugar" need.

I usually purchase the smallest package I can find of these dried

fruits. When I get them home I divide them into little ziplock snack

bags, three pieces to the bag. I then pile all the little baggies into

a colourful plastic basket and put the basket in the freezer. This

really helps me control my "snacking" because I make myself take out

just one baggy at a time and let it thaw out before I eat it... No

cheating with the microwave, either! :-) Often by the time the baggy

is thawed out, I don't want more that one or two pieces.

When my world gets turned upside down for one reason or another I will

take my little baggy of fruit and go for a nice long walk... usually a

half hour or more.

The combination of these two things keeps me away from the processed

sugar goodies (cookie, candy bars and what not) and eating more natural

foods. It also gets me out of the house which, with an ill husband,

isn't easy to do at times.

I try very hard not to keep store-bought sweets of any kind in the

house. On the other hand I try to keep both dried and fresh fruit on

hand. Lately, I've been learning to make my own "Fruit Trail Mix"

minus the nuts. I also package this in small 1/4 cup packets (small

ziplock snack baggies) and freeze these as well.

I also make small air tight plastic containers of fresh vegetables like

carrot and celery stick, cucumber slices and little salads.

I've found that if I make up these little packages and plastic

containers then I don't have any excuse to go on a junk food junky

binge. :-)

My biggest problem is not letting my emotions control me... I am

getting better at separating my emotions and nasty little "picking away

at anything" habit. Sometimes I fall off of my plan and this reflects

at weekly "weigh in". It's getting easier and easier to stay with my

plan and I find that I'm getting further and further away from all the

junk food that I was seriously addicted to! I'm now getting rather

resentful of stores, large and small, who put the candy bar and chip

racks right by the darn cash register, for goodness sake!! <G>

Like Pat, I love my tea, but now I drinking as much water as I can get

into me in a day... usually 4 to 6 large glasses. This is one thing

that's really making a difference!

I hope this will help others.

Silver

PS: I've now lost 18 pounds since November 28/03! I have about 27

more pounds to lose to make my doctor... and me happy! I'm not losing

what I need to lose quickly, but for the most part all this excess

weight is coming off and staying off and my blood pressure has leveled

out considerably! I wish everyone well on their personal roads to

slimming!

Thank you so much for making this group available, Pat. (HUG)

This sounds like a great idea....i will usually prepare up my vegies for snacking and put them into a large container so taht I can grab a handful when wanting....but i think that i will try this and see if it helps me with the overeating i am prone to do...

Wow! That's really disciplined of you ;=) For me,

however, a pick-me-up (as opposed to a response to a

craving) wouldn't work if I had to wait for it to thaw

out - if the blood sugar is down or the sleepiness is

taking over or the mood has dropped, then I need

something *now*. For the first, I agree that a little

(very little since, as we know and you suggest, it's

high in calories) dried fruit works fine: my choice is

usually a few raisins or a slice of dried apricot. For

the second, a cup of tea or the vitamin B drink works

fine. And if those two don't pick up the mood in a

hurry, then it's off for a brisk walk with the dogs or

a little jogging on the spot (the latter not possible

since I had that fall at Easter, but soon again

perhaps ;=)).

As for your weight loss: That's great. To lose slowly

slowly slowly and consistently is the very best way.

Oh we'd all like an instant fix to our weight gains of

course. But that rarely lasts - unless it's just say

four or five pounds we've gained after something like

a holiday, wedding, weekend away with friends ;=) For

a big weight loss and permanent (woweeee!) weight

loss, slow and steady wins the race as they say ;=)

Good for you!! You're getting there and you will Do It

- I just know you will! Congratulations on what you've

done so far - an inspiration!

Best love,

Pat ;=)

I think I might try this too! It sounds fiddly, but

hey you'd know if you were overdoing it because you'd

have dug into an extra snack bag! A good tip!!!

Thanks.
