How do I make beans in a slow cooker? They are currently in a dry state.

Any kid-friendly/ finicky DH recipes for these as well?? Thanks!

I keep reading this boiling info often and have to wonder though - not about

the reasoning and safty issue but I wonder b/c when i cook beans in the

crockpot they are always boiling at some point... is this boiling in the

crockpot

somehow " different " than when it boils on the stove? I mean boiling is boiling

right? Does no one elses crockpot make their beans boil? In otherwords maybe

mine is heating too hot or something when it is on low... in which case, I

should know about it ;-)

Most dried beans should be soaked overnight and certain beans cannot be

cooked from soaked state in the slo-cooker because they need to boil for

a certain length of time. Kidney beans for example must be boiled for 10

minutes to release toxins which could give you food poisoning.

Vegetarian Recipes for your Slo-Cooker by Annette Yates recommends

boiling most for a short time " to speed up cooking and to encourage

dried beans and peas to cook evenly. "

There are lots of different recipes for making beans in crockpot. What kind

of recipe were you going for? What are your other available ingredients?

If the beans are dry now, begin by soaking them overnight first as I do not

think you can make dried beans in a slowcooker. Anyone know a recipe where

ya can????

My understanding is that they have to boil consistently for 10 minutes -

does your slo-cooker do that? If it does, then maybe it's ok. Don't

think I'd risk it, though.

I have started out with dried beans in the crock pot for years, and have

had no problem. (I will, though, boil kidney beans first, now that I

know about the dangers of not doing so.)
