Guest guest
This looks really yummy - I love Dal! I don't have black eyed peas in the cupboard - can I substitute green lentils for both the black lentils and the black eyed peas, or will that change it too much? Thanks! Guest guest
I don't see why that would be a problem, personally. cherrie On Mon, 18 Oct 2004 18:45:21 +0000, Amanda Beckwith <lovethecold wrote: > > This looks really yummy - I love Dal! Guest guest
The black lentils I know are split, very tiny, and sort of dissolve when cooked. They're not the same as black beans, which are larger, firmer, and not split. Looking at the recipe, though, I think you can substitute any lentil or dal you like; it's sure to be tasty. Here's a web page with nice photos and descriptions of the different kinds of dal. The one I'm talking about is " split urad dal " http://www.foodsubs.com/Lentils.html#urad%20dal , " Amanda Beckwith " <lovethecold@h...> wrote: > > This looks really yummy - I love Dal! Guest guest
I made this over the weekend and really liked it! I used orange and green lentils (didn't have any black eyed peas, but will try those next time), and mistakenly used V-8 instead of tomato juice. It still turned out really yummy with a sweet curry undertone. It was a soup for me, not think enough for a Dal. Or at least, not how I really think of Dal. I cooked it in the crockpot for 6 hours, could have gone longer but I like my lentils to still have some texture. , " glitterophelia " <glitterophelia@g...> wrote: > > Rama's Lentil Soup (Dal) > > 3/4 cup black lentils (turtle beans) > 3/4 cup black eyed peas > 24 ounces water > 1 1/2 teaspoons salt > 1/2 teaspoon turmeric > 1 teaspoon cumin seed > 1 tablespoon oil > 2 tablespoons coriander powder > 1/2 teaspoon ground hot pepper -- optional > 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder > 2 tablespoons dried onions > 2 cups tomato juice > > This recipe is done in a pressure cooker, but can also be made in a > crock pot and cooked all day.
