Guest guest
For all beans I toss a bit of konbu sometimes spelled kombu in the pot. It takes care of the gas situation. It's a dried seaweed sold at Whole Foods and Asian markets and it adds a naturally good flavor, little bit of salt to the taste so you can cut down on adding additional salt. Cones in flat dried pieces......Donna msbauju <msbauju wrote: That might be an " it depends " . I live at high altitude, and I find I even have to soak lentils for them to get completely cooked in the crockpot--even with a full day's cooking. There is another reason you might want to soak beans--the substances in beans that cause intestinal gas are water soluable, and so some portion of them are removed by soaking and discarding the rinse water. This works particularly well with lentils. Kidney beans have their own issues that you need to be aware of: Bean poisoning The syndrome is usually caused by the ingestion of raw, soaked kidney beans, either alone or in salads or casseroles. Guest guest
This Donna adds kombu (kelp) also, but it doesn't alleviate the gas situation. Does make the beans taste better, though. Guest guest
Gosh, it does taste great and really helps my family with the gas problem but everyone is different. My Mom is sick with tummy pains for days if she eats tofu.......... Have you tried a few sprigs of epazote? You only need 1-2 leaves. It's like bay leaves. Not good for you if you use a lot. It's popular in Mexican cooking here in Calif. I have a plant that grows wild if I don't cut it down. Came off a little sprig I just stuck in the ground.
