Guest guest
>I am not sure it is the same, but I found something similar at the grocery this week. Its made by moringstar, Steak something. Well, they're in the same family in that they're made of soy and other products. The TVP chunks are hard, dry chunks, so hard that if you bit into one without rehydrating it first you would break a tooth. They look and smell like some brands of dried dog food. Those Morningstar Farms Steak Strips are not " TVP chunks " but *are* delicious! Only one store near me sells them, and they fly off the freezer shelf when they get them in so I rarely get a chance to grab a bag, but they're perfect for making crockpot " beef " stew and chili. The first time I used them my husband asked me why I started to buy meat again, that's how good they are. Unfortunately, I don't think they're vegan. IIRC they have some egg in the ingredient listing. I don't have a bag right now so I can't double-check. Sue in NJ
Guest guest
As far as I can tell they are vegan, in fact I think I saw the word vegan on the package in the store (I haven't bought any yet). Here's the website for them: http://www.kelloggs.com/cgi-bin/brandpages/product.pl?product=4970 & company=23 -- the ingredient list is > Veggie steak (water, wheat gluten, soy protein isolate, natural flavor, > malt extract, autolyzed yeast extract, onion powder, garlic powder, > evaporated cane juice, salt, pea protein, carrot fiber, molasses, vitamin B1 > [thiamin hydrochloride], vitamin B2 [riboflavin], niacinamide, vitamin B6 > [pyridoxine hydrochloride], vitamin B12, calcium pantothenate, iron [ferric > orthophosphate], zinc oxide, magnesium oxide, dipotassium phosphate), > seasoning (dehydrated garlic and onion, salt, maltodextrin, black pepper, > dehydrated green and red bell pepper, evaporated cane juice, natural > flavor), expeller pressed canola oil. I'm not up on whether those vitamins and minerals are from vegan sources, though. I usually use the dry TVP chunks myself. Guest guest
TVP chunks (dry) aren't for sale in my area. I suppose I'll mailorder some eventually. In the meantime, for some of my recipes I make " tofu chunks " . They come out kind of like chicken or pork cubes, and work in casseroles and stir fries. 1 package (12 or 16 oz.) tofu, drained, 1/2 or 1/3 " dice 2 tbls vegetable oil 2 tbls Liquid Aminos or mild-flavored soy sauce Patiently fry the tofu cubes in the oil/soy sauce mixture until the cubes are golden brown on all sides and have shrunken by at least a third. Low-fat tofu doesn't seem to work as well for this; I think it may be lower fat because it just contains more water. It shrinks down too much. According to the manufacturer's website, they are vegan: http://www.kelloggs.com/brand/msfarms/health_nutrition/vegan.shtml Here are the ingredients: http://www.kelloggs.com/cgi-bin/brandpages/product.pl?product=4970 & company=23 Lari Kirby -- Footsteps in the sands of time are not made by sitting down. --- The greatest glory does not exist in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.
