Guest guest
I neglected to suggest a recipe because I wasn't really sure what type Violet was asking for. What came to mind, however, was baked beans (though the tomato sauce appears to be ketchup). Here's a pretty basic recipe (of course, I'd cook the beans in the crockpot rather than on the stove): *Crockpot Baked Beans* 1.5 pound dried beans (ie pea, navy or great northern) (3 cups) 1 medium onion chopped 1/2 cup ketchup 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 cup water 2 T dry mustard 2 T molasses 1 T salt 1 inch fresh ginger root (minced) Wash and sort beans. Cover with water and bring to a boil. Boil 2 minutes and remove from heat. let soak 1 hour. Bring to a boil again and then simmer approx 45 min or until cooked but not soft of mushy. Drain beans. Put in crockpot. Mix the rest of ingredients into the beans. Cook on low for 10-12 hours. (source: http://www.ivu.org/recipes/main/crockpot.html) Another thought would be chili. I really like this one, and will be taking it to my office's Halloween potluck next week, and I will cook the beans first in the crockpot. You can use any kind of beans you like, they don't have to be black and Navy. *Black & White Vegetarian Chipotle Chili (Crock Pot) * This is medium-spicy, but like any chili recipe, you can modify this for your own taste by adjusting the amount of chipotle and chili powder used, and the type of canned tomatoes with peppers you use. I used Del Monte's Diced Tomatoes with Zesty Jalapenos, which I think is kickier than the typical tomatoes & green chilis. I brown ground beef on the side for my husband to put into his portion. I usually use cooked dried beans instead of canned. by kburie 1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed (or 1 1/2 - 2 cups cooked beans) 1 (15 ounce) can navy beans, drained and rinsed (or 1 1/2 - 2 cups cooked beans) 1 (14 1/2 ounce) can diced tomatoes 1 (14 1/2 ounce) can diced tomatoes and green chilies or diced tomatoes with jalapenos 1 cup onions, chopped 6 garlic cloves, minced 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 tablespoon sweet Hungarian paprika 1 tablespoon dried cilantro (optional) 1/2 teaspoon fresh coarse ground black pepper 1 teaspoon chipotle chiles, minced Stir everything together in a 4 1/2 quart or larger slow cooker. Set power to low and cook for 6 hours or longer (we usually let this cook for 10 hours). Serve with cheese or sour cream if you wish.
