Hi, Vik. What an interesting name, what is its origin? Do you have to be in

Toronto to be on the list? I know how to end a sentence with " eh " , does

that count? :) Yes, my understanding is there are a lot of veggies in

California, especially Southern California where I am, though I only know a

few. I am a vegan, and I know of no others, though they must be here ! It

makes it difficult to find a life partner, I'll tell you! I don't allow meat

in my house, so really a spouse would have to share my lifestyle..... I

have a good friend in Toronto, although she isn't vegan, not even vegetarian,

but she has given up veal. At least it's a first step, I figure. Anyway, it

interests me that you guys are in Toronto. My grandmother grew up about an

hour away from there, in Elora. My friend in Toronto went there, on her own

accord, to take pictures of Elora for me, etc., and found out her grandmother

grew up there too and they had to have known each other ! It was so cool.

Anyway, I have a soft spot for Canada because of my grandmother, and because

I have met nice people from there. I do a search for vegan lists

periodically, and this one came up the other day, so I joined. You seem like

nice people.

LOL Ok, Vik, an initiation right, is that it? Trial by fire? Ok, let's see.

Well, the reason I moved from vegetarianism to veganism was because I

realized that my concern for others was more than a diet; it involved my

whole lifestyle and outlook on life. While I don't have much sympathy for

criminals (whose lives seem to be centered around *not* respecting others'

rights, which to me is what veganism is about), I don't think we have the

right to experiment on anyone who isn't willing or making informed consent.

Of course, someone might say, do we have the right to lock them up in the

first place, but I guess I would say yes, because they showed they could not

respect others' rights and in order to protect society as a whole they had to

be isolated. But, no, I don't think we have the right to experiment on them.

Even if we made the law say that " if you break law X you will be imprisoned

and experimented on " , I still don't think we have the moral right, because

often people who end up in jail don't have the ability to think long-term, so

the threat is really meaningless as a deterrent. Okay, how's that? :)

Carol (throwing ball out of her court) :)

PS East Indian, I love curry, I believe it's Indian in origin, is that right?

Hi there Carol . . .

Thanks, my name is East Indian in origin. NO, I don't think you have to be

from Toronto to be a part of Planet Vegan,

I think the whole point behind this is to create awareness to our Vegan

ideals, eh?

I am vegan for the most part ... today we were discussing casein in Tofu

Rella . . . I consider myself a vegan, but I eat Tofu Rella occasionally

(once every couple of months). Yes, it's very difficult to find a partner

who shares your beliefs.

A lot of guys and girls who are hip in Toronto are also pretty superficial,

and to find a partner who is at least a vegetarian is a surprise. I won't

have meat in my home either . . . my roomy has cheese and milk occasionally

in the fridge, but never eggs! 90% of the time she does soy milk, and rarely

ever eats cheese in the home. We are basically vegan at home, but outside my

roomy is lacto-ovo.

Yeah, I guess we think Toronto is pretty cool too! We never would have met

if we didn't live around here.

So, welcome to our mail list ... we like to talk about politically sensitive

issues such as speciesism, etc.

I raised an issue in one of my last emails, but no one has touched it yet...

using prisoner's as research animals.

Want to go for it?
