I'm always happy to be cheered up by a happy animal story - let's face it, there are far too many of the other sort, so I checked the chicken story out. A lovely happy little piece which brightened my day, so I thought I'd roam a bit through the rest of the site. I only got as far as http://www.upc-online.org/summer97/su97battery_hen_poem.html, at which point I decided to leave whilst I still had a bit of the warm fuzzies left. This poem really made me think. Something that's always puzzled me is how some people care so much about animals, others not at all. What's the difference, I've always wondered? And I think now that the answer is empathy (forgive me if everyone else in the whole world already knew this). This poem is very short and uses no overtly emotive imagery or dramatic words. In fact it is quite plain in its way, but the last line really hits you - well, it really hit me, anyway. But I could imagine it leaving someone cold who had no empathic side to their nature. On from this thought, and at the risk of sounding very pompous, I don't think I've ever met an unintelligent veg*n - and they say fish is brain food. Hah!
