Hey Bart,

What's it like being vegan in Belgium? I hear that in places like Germany they

put pork in everything, you know like you ask for a coffee and you get bacon

bits. Okay, I'm exaggerating but I have the impression that it's more difficult

over there.

Check this out...

Ottawa, June 16, 1999 -- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Health

Canada are continuing to urge

consumers not to purchase or eat certain Belgian food products. This follows two

previous CFIA food safety alerts on certain suspect Belgian foods due to

possible contamination with dioxins. New information from Belgium indicates that

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), as well as dioxins, may have contaminated

these food products.

The CFIA is prepared to seize suspect products if importers, retailers,

restauranteurs, and food service operators do not comply with the Agency’s

request to withdraw from sale and hold the products. In addition, certificates

from Belgium verifying the safety of the products will not be accepted by the

CFIA until such time as it can determine their validity.

Health Canada advises Canadians that exposure to PCBs and dioxins may contribute

to health concerns such as cancer and problems with fertility and reproduction.

Initial information from Europe indicates that some Belgian products have a high

level of contamination, well above levels found in Canadian foodstuffs, and

these food products should be avoided. Sample Belgian food products are

currently being analysed in laboratories across Canada. Until more information

becomes available to confirm or clear suspect products, Health Canada and the

CFIA are advising all consumers to avoid these products as a precautionary

measure.

The Belgian foods of concern are those that may contain pork or pork products,

poultry or poultry products, beef or beef products, dairy products, or products

that may contain eggs or egg components. Examples include cheese, milk

chocolate, mayonnaise, cakes and pastries, breads, pasta, and ice cream.

Consumers should check the ingredients on the product label.

Consumers, importers, retailers, restauranteurs, and food service operators

should set aside and hold any suspect Belgian products until the CFIA can advise

further on their safety.

Canada’s ban on the importation of Belgian pork and pork products, poultry and

poultry products, beef and beef products, dairy products, eggs, and livestock

feed remains in place.

A CFIA official is in Europe to obtain the most current information. Updates

will be provided as new information becomes available.

A consumer information line has been established at 1-800-852-3766. ----

Don't I know it.

>McDonalds sucks because...they don't respect life

Not that I condone violence or anything, I do think it's cool how Belgium

activists are taking a stand against McD's.

5/14/99; Sint-Niklaas - The Belgium ALF made a come-back after months of silence

and set fire to a McDonald's restaurant. The ALF immobilised security cameras

and poured gasoline through the ventilation duct. The newspaper reports that a

passerby noticed the fire and alarmed the fire department around 2 in the

morning. It took them about a half hour to douse the fire after breaking in

through a window to reach it. The damage was limited to the storage area and the

refrigeration area, there was also general smoke damage. The initials ALF were

spray painted on the walls. Claimed by Rode Haan (Red Rooster)

And August 11 a McDonald's in Merksem went up in flames.

Hopefully you guys will never have to endure having McDonald's at every

intersection like we do.

Hi, Anji!

Being vegan in Belgium works out kinda nice! In every city, there's at at

least 1 good health store...In Hasselt, my hometown, there are 3 good stores

& in Ghent, where I study History, there's at least 2 of 'em. I was soooo

surprised when I found out you heard about the ALF-assaults all the way up

in Canada( that IS where you're from, right?). COOL!!! Well, about the

dioxin crisis...the government knew about cancer inducing dioxins in meat &

dairy products already in january '99, but they kept it a secret so the meat

industry wouldn't suffer from any economical consequences...it was but in

april/may that the news broke out, thanx to some clever reporters...This

example shows again that goverments choose economical benefit above

lives...animal lives as well as human lives!!! Experts said that in the

follow-up to the crisis, 4000-5000 people will develop CANCER as a DIRECT

REULT OF THE DIOXIN IN THEIR " FOOD " !!!

Another example of the economical agenda of the goverment...

If you hold one goose or duck in your backyard & you feed it extremely big

quantities of corn, in order to eat it's fat liver (which is 8 times too

big), you're punishable under the law of " animal welfare " .

If you do exactly the same thing, but this time with 1000 animals & you get

yourself a permission to do so (which is easily obtainable), then there's

nothing wrong at all and they'll even congratulate you, because you're

helping the country's economics....AN OUTRAGE, isn't it???

Well, that's it for now...

Take care.
