Every month I get a e-mailing re: the whales etc, called Whalesdesk bulletin. I

usually enjoy it fully- however today I got a little surprised by an unusual

editorial. I've included in this email a letter to the 'editor' and also the

peice Im talking about. Enjoy.

Hi there,

I have been receiving your WhaleDesk bulletin for quite a while

now, and, considering I love animals and want to help anyway I can,

I appreciate the information it brings to me. However, the most

recent issue below has an attached " editorial " . I've seen this before

and I know it is supposed to be cute and lighthearted, but, how

is this relevant to Whaledesk? I am serious about preventing the

degradation of the earth in any way possible, and I've personally

gone so far as to become a complete (Vegan) vegetarian. The raising

of cattle, pigs etc for slaughter is the number one cause of depletion

of the rainforest and of our resources, as well as a large contribution

to world starvation (see: The waste produced by just one hog farm

can be comparable to the waste of one large city. (see

http://factoryfarm.org/topic-environment-soil

,air,water.html)

Why do I bring this up?

Well, firstly, as an environmentalist, I see the connection between

consumerism and the damage to nature, between the meat industry

and pollution of our lakes, rivers and oceans and I see that all

of this effects the whales too.

What's my point? Well, that's is what I ask you when you forwarded

this 'editorial' about wanting to " go to McDonalds and pretending

it is a four star restaurant. " How is this responsible of you to

send me a fun little rant about being a kid again, and going to

McDonalds and being a part of one of the largest problems today's

environmentalists face?

I don't mean to give you a lecture, its just that I think that as

someone who cares about the environment, and is in charge of sending

out a very informative list, you might want to know.

There is a lot of information about McDonalds at this site

http://www.mcspotlight.org/

that might interest you. McDonalds is not ever going to be a four

star restaurant, and recommending that we pretend it is, or that

we even spend our money there, is outrageous. I really do enjoy

Whaledesk bulletins, but please, spare me the spam.

Thank you.

I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of an 8 year-old

again.

I therefore officially tendering my resignation as an adult.

I want to go to McDonald's and think that it's a four-star restaurant.

I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make a sidewalk with rocks.

I want to think M & M's are better than money because you can eat them.

I want to lie under a big oak tree and run a lemonade stand with

my friends on a hot summer's day.

I want to return to a time when life was simple.

When all you knew were colours, multiplication tables, and nursery

rhymes, but that didn't bother you, because you didn't know what

you didn't know and you didn't care.

All you knew was to be happy because you were blissfully unaware

of all the things that should make you worried or upset.

I want to think the world is fair. That everyone is honest and good.

I want to believe that anything is possible.

I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life and be overly

excited by the little things again.

I want to live simple again. I don't want my day to consist of computer

crashes, mountains of paperwork, depressing news, how to survive

more days in the month than there is money in the bank, doctor bills,

gossip, illness, and loss of loved ones. I want to believe in the

power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, justice, peace, dreams,

the imagination, mankind, and making angels in the snow.

So . . . here's my cheque book and my car-keys, my credit card bills

and all my statements. I am officially resigning from adulthood.

And if you want to discuss this further, you'll have to catch me first,

cause. . . . " Tag! You're it. "

Merry Christmas.

Graham J. Clarke.
