I just wanted to forward off a mailing to you all I recently received, re: the number of species of plants and animals on the planet ... I like to use numbers when I speak about speciesism (to put things into perspective for those who don't understand that we are only " One in ... 1.75 million species of plants and animals " ) .. when you show others that being human isn't as important to the general scheme of things, in-so-far as the planet is concerned and from a numbers perspective, we become just a little more humbled in our position on this planet ... I think an earth worm does more for the general good of the planet than we do ... anyone concur? So, here it is ... look down further ... use it as you need it ... there are a couple of variations on the number as you can see ... Oh yeah! Anji and Paul ... The current estimate of the total number of species described so far is 1.75 million. Estimates of the total number (once all are described) vary from about 3-20 million. So far about 450,000 plants have been described, and about 750,000 insects! About 3000 bacterial species have been named, and about 15,000 protist species.
