I'm new here...the rookie vegan. I would take some recipes in lieu of an

invitation to brunch (please, pretty please). OR, tips on what products are

hot and what's not. I don't have a Whole Foods nearby...the closest thing to

me is a Trader Joe's. Any suggestions appreciated. I'm having a tough time

finding products without milk.

Sandy ... you have a small problem?

Wanna live in Toronto?

We have the veggie world at our doorsteps! You name it, we gots it!

okay .. maybe not ... you live in California?

Here's the deal if you can get it ...

Fantastic Foods has a bunch of stuff

Vegetarian Chilli

Nature's Burger

Tofu Burger

Tofu Scrambler

Whatever you do, don't buy Fantastic Foods Hummus or Falafel .. make your

own from scratch .. even if you fuck it up a few times to start, it will

still be better than theirs ...

Boca Burger is pretty cool ...

Gimme Lean makes an amazing " Sausage " and " Ground (god, I hate to say it)

Beef " type thingy .. the " Sausage " one is very, very good ...

If you get really lazy .. there is a product called Golden Chunks or Golden

Nuggets or something like that ... you toss it in the oven for 10 minutes

and it comes like chicken nuggets or something ...

In Canada, there is a company called Yves ... they make everything ...

breakfast links, veggie back bacon, " Just Like Ground, " tofu dogs (not all

that great), deli slices, tofu ham slices ... not sure if you can their

stuff in the U.S., but, believe it or not, in Toronto, it's more common to

find this stuff than real hot dogs some times ...(maybe it's 'cause we

aren't looking for real hot dogs?) ...

Recipes ... I think Anji's site is full of them ...

http://www3.sympatico.ca/anji/recipes.html

I just make shit up as I go along ... experiment a lot .. just make sure

that you eat the right stuff ... try and get rid of bread and potatoes ...

what ever you do, don't substitute bread and potatoes for meat ... get those

greens! lots of bok choy, broccoli, spinach, rapini, (all good for iron,

calcium) stuff like that ... baked squash ... sweet potatoes is a very good

carb ... cauliflower for calcium . ... tvp (textured vegetable protein -

like So-Soya or Soya Chunks) or tofu for protein ...

Good luck .. and if you really need some stuff to make that you don't find

on Anji's site ... just send me a mail ... carnival

take care

Hi Vikas.

What's wrong with bread & potatoes (assuming of course that we're not

talking about sliced white and french fries)? Iron, vitamin C......what is

it that I don't know?

Hello beautiful people,

Mark your calendars, cuz you're all coming over on Sunday! Well I wish it could

be so, but you're all invited anyway.

As many of you are already aware, I have vegan brunches on Sundays. We (Nadine,

Anthony, Paul, myself, sometimes Stan, and now Vik) have the Sunday brunch

tradition because it is impossible to get decent vegan diner food. So in lieu of

opening a restaurant we open up our home to our groovy like-minded friends. It's

one of my resolutions to get more of you here. So, you simply must come over on

Sunday. Yes you!

Email me if you need my new address, and let me know what time is good for you.

See you then!

-anji

Those of you that are not in Toronto, I wish I could fly you in for the weekend.

If you ever come to Toronto let me know.

Hi Cathy ...

Basically ... what happens with most new vegetarians is that they become

dependant on Bread and Potatoes to supplement meat in their diet ...

Bread is one of the most " unnatural " foods in our diet ... it's completely

man-made processed shit ... we need to slowly but surely eliminate it from

our diets ... I know we all love it ... I mean could you imagine going to an

Indian joint and not having Naan with your meal? But, the stuff has so much

gluten in it ... even most of the whole wheat loaves we pick up from the

grocery still aren't much better than the white loaves. There are some good

breads at the health food store, but I don't even bother with them ... I

just try and keep my bread intake down ... I don't really buy it at home any

more .. only when I am out ...

Potatoes are the same deal, except I think it has more to do with the starch

and sugars it creates in our bodies ... I think that Sweet Potatoes don't

create all that much glucose ... which is what I believe Bread and Potatoes

create in our bodies ... and glucose isn't all that good for us ..

especially if we are overweight and have a risk of contracting diabetes

(which I am both - about 20 lbs overweight and have a history of diabetes in

my family).

So, I eat potatoes about once every two months ... rice is better ( I eat

that several times per week) ... I have cut pasta down to once every couple

of weeks ... don't eat Bread with your pasta if you can help it ... get more

greens ... you can never get enough greens in the diet.

Talk to you soon!

Dear Vikas - thanks for the advice, that's the first I've heard of any of

this. I too am carrying a surplus, though I'll not mention how much, and my

uncle had diabetes which I am desperate to avoid. I eat tons of potatoes,

baked, boiled, mashed and even occasionally oven chips. I'm only on one

small wholemeal loaf a week and I don't always finish it, so hopefully not

too bad there. Both bread and potatoes are heavily advocated by nutritional

experts here in the UK - we are actually advised to cut down on animal foods

and eat plenty of bread, potatoes, pasta and rice. We're also told to eat

at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day - how does that compare

with the advice in Canada?

I am well displeased to know that there will be a vegan Sunday brunch there

for the asking and I am prevented by several thousand miles! Thanks anyway

Anji. It sounds like you are all totally spoilt in Canada - I have to

drive thirty miles to eat out!

I know what Sandy means about having trouble finding foods without dairy.

When I converted (all of 6 months ago) I had a very frustrating time because

so many foods seem to contain whey or milk in some form, often completely

unnecessarily. Unfortunately I've come to the conclusion that the only way

is to buy basic ingredients rather than manufactured foods and cook from

scratch (with the obvious exception of bread!). I make most of my own soup

(apart from one vegan variety) and I no longer have with cakes or biscuits

because I can't be bothered to cook them. Maybe as the world becomes

gradually more enlightened then the manufacturers will realise that by

including animal products they are automatically reducing their potential

market, but I'm not holding my breath! Sounds like you are a lot further

along that path than the UK.

Thank again for the info.

Cheers

Cathy

Hi Cathy ...

I think in Canada, we are advised to eat 4-5 portions of grains, breads and

cereals .. (I have heard that Cereals are one of the greatest producers of

glucose in the human body ... go with Fructose instead ... from fruits) ..

Wheat grass ... if you can dig it ... has a very high percentage of protein

in it ...

In Canada .. they changed the food guide a bit ... they ballooned the

amount of fruits and vegetables to something like 7 -10 servings per day ..

Meat is like 2 servings and so is dairy ... the ONLY reason those are on

there, is because the Canadian govt. much the like the US, heavily

subsidises those industries ...

From what I have been informed ... there used to be like 10 food groups or

something crazy like that ... and when the dairy and meat industry was being

" plugged " ... they Canada Food Guide was knocked down to like 4 groups ..

and I think, not sure ... but vegetables were only like 4-5 servings per

day...

For some reason I figured that Veganism was much more widespread in the U.K.

I mean there was a vegetarian society there in the 1800's ... Gandhi was a

part of it when he was in University ...

Joe Satriani? Yes, I missed the show ... had a play a show of my own that

night ... I think Steve Vai and Kirk Hammet (Metallica) are still trying

to convert him to vegetarianism ...

Hi Folks,

Welcome, Sandy, and anyone else who might be new here but hasn't

introduced themselves. I just wanted to comment on breads and such. I

like them a lot, but I eat mostly rice for carbs. I imagine that

potatoes and pasta and bread are really not too bad for you, but it's

just too easy to eat too much of them. I find that sometimes I eat way

too much if I don't have any fat in my meal because that's what gives

you the full feeling. Sweet foods also accomplish the same thing, and

sweet AND fatty foods (like Toffuti Cuties) make for a very satisfying

desert. Carbs are good for getting energy, but you don't want to overdo

it. I doubt if you can get too much vegetable in your diet as long as

you eat a diverse variety, I mean there are lots of healthy people who

eat rice and vegetables and maybe some tofu (think Buddhists) every day.

By the way, I was told that Naan bread has milk or yogurt in it, which

was disappointing to me because I love naan bread. My friend, Amit,

owns a restaurant called Royal Kashmir and he's always very straight

with me on what's vegan (unlike most restaurateurs) even though he eats

and serves meat in his restaurant. I was surprised to find that there's

milk in his naan. It may not be the case in all restaurants, and you

could double check when buying naan at a store.

whoops, gotta run.

Ciao for now,

Anthony

Hey Anthony

I have seen what you are talking about .. in some store bought Naan's ...

most of them don't have the milk or yoghurt ... but some do ...

Now, here's the scary part ... I just checked out my recipe book for Naan,

and, the verdict is ... indeed... the recipe calls for not only milk, but

also yoghurt ...

Now, I remember when I was a kid, working in an Indian Restaurant, that the

owners didn't use milk or yoghurt to make Naan, however, I think

it will be best for me to ask each time I go ... which is quite often ... or

perhaps just frequent the ones that don't use it .. because, I mean,

how can you not have Naan with your daal or with your saag? It just doesn't

seem right, does it?

We'll figure this out!
