Hmmm, let's see here...

They actually did away with the 4 Food Groups altogether after realizing

that meat and dairy is killing us, basically. And so what we have now is

called the 'Food Guide Pyramid' instead. With the new Food Guide Pyramid it

is (finally) acknowledged that it is better to eat more of some foods and

not others. For instance, it is recommended to eat way more grains than meat

and so grains are at the widest part of the pyramid, the bottom, and meat is

tucked away in the top right corner. This is a real improvement.

There are indeed *many* Food Guide Pyramids including... Food Guide Pyramid

from the National Cattlemen's Beef Assn., Food Guide Pyramid for Children

With Diabetes, Food Guide Pyramid for Young Children, Food Guide Pyramid for

People Over 70 Years, Food Guide Pyramid from Internet Food Channel, Food

Guide Pyramid from Campbell's Soup (no kidding!) etc. etc.

There are some cultural Food Guide Pyramids here

http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/etext/000023.html though not all the links

work, including Arabic, Asian, Catalan, Japanese, Korean, Latin American,

Mediterranean, Puerto Rican, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

Also -- Jointly with the Harvard School of Public Health and other

institutions, Oldways has published the " healthy eating pyramids, " a set of

unique dietary guides based on worldwide dietary traditions closely

associated with good health. Individual pyramids have been based on

Asian http://www.oldwayspt.org/html/p_asian.htm LatinAmerican

http://www.oldwayspt.org/html/p_latin.htm Mediterranean

http://www.oldwayspt.org/html/p_med.htm

and Vegetarian http://www.oldwayspt.org/html/p_veg.htm diets.

All: http://www.oldwayspt.org/html/pyramid.htm

Asian Diet Pyramid offers alternative to U.S. Food Guide Pyramid -

" To offer a healthful alternative to the 1992 U.S. Food Guide Pyramid, which

lumps some animal and plant foods together in a single group, Cornell and

Harvard University researchers have teamed up with other experts to assist

the non-profit foundation, Oldways Preservation & Exchange Trust, unveil an

official Asian Diet Pyramid. It reflects the traditional, plant-based rural

diets of Asia, which research increasingly shows to be linked to much lower

rates of certain cancers, heart disease, obesity and, in some cases,

osteoporosis and other chronic, degenerative diseases than those found in

the United

States.

The Asian Diet Pyramid emphasizes a wide base of rice, rice products,

noodles, breads and grains, preferably whole grain and minimally processed

foods,

topped by another large band of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds.

Daily physical exercise, a small amount of vegetable oil and a moderate

consumption of plant-based beverages, including tea (especially black and

green), sake, beer and wine also are recommended daily. Small daily servings

of

dairy products (low fat) or fish are optional; sweets, eggs and poultry are

recommended no more than weekly, and red meat no more than monthly. "

And then there's the " What People Are (Unfortunately) Really Eating! "

Pyramid. By the way, it's UPSIDE DOWN.

Here's the Vegetarian Food Guide Pyramid.

It is not vegan, which brings us back to...

The Four New Food Groups http://www.pcrm.org/health/VSK/VSK9.html

If every day you eat a variety of grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes,

and you eat enough food, you cannot go wrong. The ONLY thing you would ever

have to think twice about is B12, so get the fortified soymilk and you'll be

fine. Don't stess about bread and potatoes, just don't eat white bread and

french fries.

Do not fear carbs my friends. Do not let the high-protein/anti-carb people

lead you to the dark side. Have a potato once in a while, enjoy yourself.
