Guest guest
Breakfasts ... you want to avoid cereals .. as they produce glucose in our systems ... which, I believe, turns into fat ... causes stuff like diabetes ... You preferably want to do the fruit thing in the morning ... (on a typical day ... man, you don't want to see what happens at a Planet Vegan brunch!!!) Try to keep your carbs as a side dish ... when you have pasta, use a lot less compared with how much sauce, veggies and or tofu you might use. Try not to eat bread and potatoes every day ... rice is a better choice .. brown if you can get it ... Try and get iron ... lots of greens (also gives you calcium) ... bananas (potassium) ... I think you have to get Vitamin C in there when you have your greens in order for your body to absorb the iron ... I think most veggies (not the people, the actual veggies themselves) are a good source of protein but I still try and eat Tofu or Textured Vegetable Protein everyday (this is important if you go to the gym) ... get exercise everyday! Snacks ... raisins ... sesame snaps (good source of iron -via black strap molasses .. sesame seeds are a great source of calcium) ... more fruits (of which I don't eat enough) .. when I am bad, I will go for Smoky BBQ Doritos (the only vegan Doritos!) ... but I have that about once per week or once every other week ... Milk is not necessary in the diet ... but, if your kids can't give it up ... that's understandable ... it took all of my teen years to give it up ... I was a veggie from the time I was 15 and didn't go vegan until I was almost 20 ... Organic foods? personally, I don't buy them ... but, I have heard that you can taste the difference! just ask Anji ... she and Paul buy Organic stuff... There are some great veggie burgers by a company called BOCA ... if your kids are in a McMood, throw some Boca Burgers on the Barbie, and then will never notice the difference ... as a matter of fact, they may forget McMassacre's doesn't even exist ... Have fun ... Guest guest
Hey everyone....Although there are some good concepts in vic's posting I would have to disagree with the anti-cereal stance. If you are talking about cap'n crunch or count chocula or sugar crisp, then ya, avoid it altogether. But fiber is never a bad thing as a clean colon is a happy colon. Fruit can be a great way of getting fiber. But grain found in cereal is better. My personal favorite is natures path organic brand 'mesa sunrise.'The ingredients are;corn meal, evaporated cane juice, buckwheat flour, quinoa, flax, amaranth, sea salt, ascorbic acid. Or the non coated mini wheats, Oatbran, and many others. I enduringly refer to my natures path cereal as " colon blow 2000. " God bless saturday night live. Guest guest
My goodness me, I certainly did'nt mean to offend Count Chocula or the followers of Count Chocula and his teachings. I was obviously way out of bounds on that one. After all Count Chocula is the cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast.I must also apologize to all vampires out there who happen to be made of cocolate,we are all as god made us and chocolate vampires are no exception to the rules of love and compassion. I hope I have made amends....Now aside from that, don't forget about the fabulous vegan brunch Anji and I are preparing on sunday the 20th.Food,fun and like minded human animals.with love P.B. > " Vikas Sharma " <carnival > >< > >RE: What are some healthy things to eat?? >Thu, 17 Feb 2000 06:58:44 -0500 > >Hey Man, > >Don't you be dissin' Count Chocula!!!!! > >Vikas Sharma >Director of Operations & Media >Carnival Management > >Web: http://www3.sympatico.ca/carnival >Email: carnival >Phone 416. > > > > >Paul Brennan [brennan67] >Thursday, February 17, 2000 5:10 AM > >RE: What are some healthy things to eat?? > > > " Paul Brennan " <brennan67 > >Hey everyone....Although there are some good concepts in vic's >posting I would have to disagree with the anti-cereal stance. Guest guest
Hi all, I have to say that I don't think that cereals and carbs are bad for you in any way. There are some people that don't easily digest gluton found in grains, but I don't know how common that is. Less common than lactose intolerance, I would bet. There's a lot of anti-carb propaganda out there right now because people are buying into the high-protein fad diet and are having success losing weight. This is how the silly diet works: your body can not process fat without sugars (glycerol in particular, I believe) which come from carbohydrates or fruit. People on high-protein diets are advised to not eat carbohydrates (cereals, bread, potatoes, rice), fruits (even carrots), fruit juices or any other sources of sugar. This is so they can eat all the fat and meat that they want and the fat will not be properly digested (you'll see people eating hamburgers and hot dogs but not the bun or french fries). Lack of fibre and vitamins as well as high cholesterol are dangerous factors in this diet, and most of these " addicted to carbs " diet books contain warnings and advise that you don't do this diet for more than 14 days at a time. I'm sure that this diet is not recommended by the American Dietetic Association. If you're normal diet contains reasonably low fat (less than 35 grams of fat per day) then you don't need to avoid grains and fruit and starchy foods. I have a friend who did this diet a long time ago, and he lost a bunch of weight and then he gained lots back when he stopped doing the special diet. He's on it again and is losing weight again, but I don't think it's anywhere near as good as plain old healthy eating. Anyway, I think that's where a lot of the " carbs=fat " ideas have come from. By the way, here's some foods that I love that I think kids would love too (I eat like a kid most of the time): " Vegan McMuffin " Boca " Vegan Original " burger (texture and taste like a fast food burger) on toasted crumpet with Nayonnaise (you can make your own vegan mayonnaise too) and ketchup. Tastes like a " Sausage McMuffin " without the cholesterol or nearly as much fat, depending on how you cook the patty. I like to cook it in a teflon pan with a little olive oil. Mashed potatoes and kale. I loved mashed potatoes as a kid, and sneaking in some well chopped up, lightly steamed kale into the mix will do them good if they don't mind the kale flavour. Kids seem a little sensitive to leafy green vegetables like spinach and brussel sprouts. Spaghetti sauce with brussel sprouts - call them " green meatballs " . Maybe chop them in half so the get more sauce in them. You can also make " sloppy joes " and anything else that calls for ground beef with Yves veggie ground round (which I've recently discovered are fortified with B12) ciao for now, Anthony Wong Paul Brennan wrote: > > " Paul Brennan " <brennan67 > > Hey everyone....Although there are some good concepts in vic's > posting I would have to disagree with the anti-cereal stance. Guest guest
I agree with everything Anthony said, plus, I can't eat gluten as well, but that's only found in wheat and highly starchy things. Many cerals have no gluten: rice for example. Also, grains similar to wheat have no gluten.. kamut, spelt.. they're all ok. -Belle ____ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
