Guest guest
As part of a non-violent protest against animal experimentation at the University of Utah and elsewhere, college students and members of the community have pitched a tent in front of the A. Ray Olpin Student Union. The tent, which lacks, among other things, a heater of any kind, will be inhabited by two or more people at all times for the entire month of March. Several of these inhabitants will also be fasting March 13-17. This event, which we are calling " Encampment Against Exploitation, " is a function of the Student Organization for Animal Rights at the University of Utah. It should be said that, in doing this, we are acting fully within the limits of the law. Our intention here is not to intimidate, but to inform the public of a practice which we consider unethical and unjustifiable. We wish not only to gather attention for ourselves, but also to demonstrate that this issue is of more importance to each of us than watching television or sleeping in a warm bed. We hope that, through our efforts, we may cause people to question to morality of animal experimentation and affect public opinion in a way which could, potentially, lead to its decline. For those of you wanting more information, the " Encampment Against Exploitation " website address is http://www.uarc.com/soar/encampment/. Questions or comments may be directed to me at p-pdmn. I will try to respond to all of them. For those of you wanting to help, you may do so be informing local mass media of our actions, by informing appropriate parties of your feelings about animal experimentation, by donating vegan food, by giving similar demonstrations of your own, or, if you're in the area, by participating in our demonstration. I apologize for the mass-posting of this message and hope it is not inappropriate subject matter for any of the lists to which I've posted it. As I do not consider myself a spokesperson for the " Encampment, " the opinions expressed above should not necessarily be treated as those of every participant, though I feel they are fairly representative.
