Hey everyone,

I had gastritis this weekend and had to go to the hospital.. It was really

bad.. I was throwing up and I had really bad stomach aches.. I had to take a

shot from stoping me from throwing up.. it made me drowsy and I didn't study

for my sociology test.. I'm still feeling sick.. damn.. and I actually

thought I was healthy.. possible causes were: (1) I ate 3 advils (one at a

time) for a migraine; (2) I ate *gasp* milk chocolate, because I was so

insanely hungry- and suddenly felt sick 15 min after; (3) I was super

stressd because of a test I missed (got mad and left the class), because of

a play later that day where I was the stage manager, and because of my

sociology test. I really don't know what to do.. I wanted to go to my

naturopath but I'm so busy I have no time! :( I'm still taking antacids,

does anyone know of another " healthy " alternative for that?

Anyways.. oh, does anyone know where non-dairy lactic acid comes from?

ok, I gotta go now, bye

remembered that Isabelle had written something about Lactic acid ..

Well, a good friend of mine is doing meds at U of T (also has a PhD. in

Chemical Eng.) .. so, I figured he might be able to answer your question

Re: FW: me sick

Yo Vik. How's it going? Let me know if Saturday's okay for hanging out.

Also, here's a bit of a response to the non-dairy lactic acid question.

I've never heard of non-dairy lactic acid but the following might be

relevant. Lactic acid is made in the body by an enzyme called lactate

dehydrogenase from the precursor pyruvate. When oxygen concentrations in

the blood are low, e.g., when exercising, less pyruvate utilization causes

a buildup of lactic acid in the blood. This is fine and will normally not

lead to sickness. Lactic acid formed in the body is known as L-lactic acid

(i.e., levorotary because it rotates polarized light in a counterclockwise

direction).

In certain types of gastrointestinal infections (often referred to as

traveller's diarrhea), bacteria in the gut can produce D-lactic acid

(i.e., dextrorotary because it rotates polarized light in a clockwise

direction), a form of lactic acid that is digested very slowly by humans

and can cause confusion, headache, visual disturbance, weakness Restated,

if an individual gets a certain type of bacterial infection in the large

intestine (like traveller's diarrhea), the product, D-lactic acid can pass

into the bloodstream resulting in a condition known as D-lactic acidosis

which is secondary to the initial gastrointestinal infection. This could

relate to Isabelle's case, however, I'm not sure.

As for alternatives to antacid treatment, again I am not sure. However,

for a case of recurrent indigestion it would be wise to see your doctor.

Possibly he/she might screen you for Heliobacter pylori (depending on the

particular case). I heard a noted gastroenterologist state that the best

treatment for H. pylori is acid inhibition with a drug such as omeprazole

in addition to two antibiotics such as amoxicillin and claithromycin for

seven days. I'm not sure about this, but sometimes it is wise for both

partners in a relationship to be screened/treated, or else you might pick

it up again from your partner.
