Guest guest
My mom is driving me freakin' CRAZY!!! She is SO anti vegetarian it's pathetic. She says she feels we " look down on others " like we are snotty or think we're better than everyone else. When my bro went vegan she verbally abused him about it every single day...when he started eating meat again she was so happy she took pictures of him eating turkey. Pathetic and sad! Ok so now she knows I am a vegetarian but she doesn't know I am vegan yet because I cannot take her abuse!!! She lives right up the street from me and helps me daily with my kids (I have 3 little kids and my husband works a lot). I truly appreciate what she does to help me--I think I'd go nuts alone all day everyday with the kids. But still! Today she yelled at me for giving my 2 year old daughter soy milk--saying my daughter doesn't like it (this was the first day she'd tried it--she has to get used to it!!). And when I try to give my kids healthy snacks they always want junk becuase she lets them have whatever they want. I'll offer them fruit or something and they'll ask for chips and my mom will say " See they know what's good! " If I ever have her babysit when I'm not home she lets them eat all junk and do things I specifically say not to do. Today I was telling her that tofu and soy milk taste good and she was like " Why are you trying to get other people to eat like you? You're not only sick but evangelizing!!! " . I was like " I have to defend myself when you go on and on about how 'nasty' soy is!! " I say I like soy milk etc and she calls me insane. She says if I don't feed my kids meat and dairy I'll be abusing them becuase they'll have all manner of deficiencies. What are some good sources (non animal) of calcium, B12 (we do take supplements), iron and protien--so I can tell her we are NOT deficient!!! Jeez! I know, I know, spend less time with her...I do, but still I need help sometimes! I have tried sitting down and saying " Please don't let the kids do this or that... " but as soon as I'm gone she does it behind my back!!! I have told her I do NOT look down on her for eating meat or whatever--that I don't CARE what she or anyone EATS!!! She wont believe me and I tell her her insults hurt me and she says she can't help it, she says she has an " irrational hatred of vegetarianism " . PLEASE you guys I need your support and encouragement...and any info you can give me about how vegan diets ARE healthy!! Thanks, I love you guys :-) Mary Ann ===== " Lately it occurs to me...what a long strange trip it's been... " ~~The Grateful Dead...we miss you Jerry... Guest guest
Dear Mary Anne ... I know what you are talking about ... I have a similar issue. My daughter (who will be 8 on Thursday), lives with her mother and eats anything. However, I felt that when she visited with my parents, that they would respect my lifestyle and feed her as I feed her when she is with me. That is not the case. At one point, I didn't speak with my parents because of this. The worst thing is that they lied to me about it. That was mind blowing. I have made a decision, that if I ever have another child (which probably won't happen), that child will not visit with my parents unsupervised. My father seems to get a kick out of giving meat to people that are close to me (he has always tried to secretly give meat to all of my ex-girlfriends, and all except for one ate it) ... whenever I found about it ... You have to decide how long you will compromise your principles. If I were in your situation, my children and my mother would have no further unsupervised contact. But that's just my take on this. I understand your pain in this horrible situation ... my sympathy and thoughts are with you. You don't need to rationalize this to your mother ... she is the one who needs to become " educated " in nutrition ... and if she doesn't understand that an omnivorous lifestyle is a dangerous lifestyle, then I don't think you need to beg for her understanding. This is how you have decided you will raise your family. It's not for her to criticize or judge. Take care, Vik Mary Ann <maryann23_1977 My mom is driving me freakin' CRAZY!!! Guest guest
Hi Mary Ann, I just wanted to talk a little about your relationship with your mom. It sounds to me that there is NO RESPECT. I couldn't imagine my mother doing that to me. She had the kids for the day and called me to see if she was allowed to give them something. They are just that--my kids and she respects that. She has even said that when people get defensive when they hear that we are Vegetarian/Vegan its because of the discipline we show and that they are lacking. My mom has even showed interest in the Vegetarian lifestyle. Why is your mom so hostile? I would let her know that if she does not respect you as a person and as a mother, you are not going to tolerate it. This might be one of the reasons you are dealing with depression (I remember your introduction with the mention of Prozac). When someone is not treated as a valuable human being with the ability to think things through, it can be very depressing. You sound like a decent person with a good head on your shoulders. You are doing what needs to be done by finding out the facts. I found a good link in regards to nutrients for Vegetarian lifestyles--maybe you can take some from this and put it towards your Vegan lifestyle. http://www.eatright.org/adap1197.html I'm sure you will be sent many more. Guest guest
Hi Mary Ann, I wish I had some advice for you about how to deal with your mother, but I can't say that I have the necessary experience. It seems, however, that a couple of other people on this list have had similar experiences that they can share. My mother was born in China, so I think she has known about the Bhuddist vegan lifestyle and is aware that there are lots of healthy vegan bhuddists. Maybe they're the real-life proof. Monks are vegan, and I've never heard of them being any less healthy - the opposite in fact. I think that Alyssa's suggestion of the ADA statement about vegetarian diet is the best since they're quite impartial and they are experts in diet without a doubt. Here's a few other links as well that are very relavent since cancer and heart disease are the biggest killers of North Americans .... Cancer Society - These pages say that less meat and more vegetables is better for the prevention of cancer, and they make no limit on how far you should take that idea, even though they don't say anything about vegetarianism directly. http://www2.cancer.org/prevention/index.cfm?prevention=1 http://www2.cancer.org/prevention/index.cfm?prevention=factors I am very very happy to find that the American Heart Association has finally put a page up advocatiing vegetarianism for health! http://www.americanheart.org/Heart_and_Stroke_A_Z_Guide/vegdiet.html they also recommend the Ornish treatment which includes a vegetarian diet. http://www.americanheart.org/Heart_and_Stroke_A_Z_Guide/ornish.html Best wishes, Anthony Alyssa wrote: > Alyssa <alyssa71 > > Hi Mary Ann, > I just wanted to talk a little about your relationship > > with your mom. Guest guest
Actually the American Cancer Society has an entire piece on vegetarianism in their 'Alternative and Complementary Therapies' section which states, " ...the majority of vegetarians choose a meatless diet because they believe it is healthier. And they are right. The US Government has long encouraged reducing the amount of animal fat in American diets, because excessive fat contributes to poor health in many ways, including increasing the risk for some cancers. Government and other professional nutritionists encourage diets filled with grains, fruits and vegetables, with minimal intake of meat, fish, poultry, dairy products and eggs. " " Scientific data show that vegetarian diets reduce not only obesity and constipation, but alcoholism and the risk of lung cancer as well. There is also evidence that diets excluding animal fats reduce the incidence of coronary artery disease, hypertension, type II diabetes and gallstones. Vegetarian diets are healthful primarily because they reduce or eliminate fat derived from animal products, while containing almost the full range of vitamins and minerals essential to good health. A wide variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts is essential to a nutritionally- balanced diet. Guest guest
I appreciate this response and the one from Mary Ann. I was hoping I wasn't too harsh. I had strong feelings when I read Mary Ann's plight. I'm not one to not speak my mind. Sometimes you have to demand respect. Thank you!! I'm glad I could contribute my two cents. --- amazon grrrl <bliss wrote: > " amazon grrrl " <bliss > > Well said Alyssa! > Bliss > > Alyssa <alyssa71 > Sun, 12 Mar 2000 15:08:16 -0800 (PST) > > Re: Unsupportive--the " My > Family " Story > > > > Alyssa <alyssa71 > > > > Hi Mary Ann, > > I just wanted to talk a little about your > relationship > > > > with your mom.
