Guest guest
ok, i'm sorry to have started such a huge ruckus(how do you spell that?)..... just to clarify, when i made a proposal to set a day each week to take action, i was NOT referring to conducting viloent or illegal activities...i agree that it would be dumb to talk of such plans in a public forum. i was referring to other 'direct actions' such as writing letters to companies, postering, legal protests, etc. which i do feel is a good idea....all i was trying to initiate is ACTION in some way, as an alternative to doing nothing but worrying and being frustrated. like my shrink said, all the worrying in the world will get you nowhere....i'm sick of doing nothing..and i don't care if any action i take has no effects...at least i'll feel better for trying. i'm also glad that all this happened because i belive now that the topic had to be discussed. anyway, my only actions to date are: -i have decided to never buy leather again -i have taken part in writing a letter to mgmt. at MAC cosmetics expressing staff's views on spokesmodels lil' kim and mary j. blige(both women are HUGE fur advocates) and how this contradicts our image as being a cruelty free company. -i have become much more outspoken regarding animal cruelty in an effort to inform my friends...i'm really focusing on educating people on which companies use animal testing. bye all, bobby
Guest guest
No ruckus! Vik and I love a good debate. You should hear us go at it at Starbucks! I am all for the day-of-action idea. I recently got 200 copies of Why Vegan http://www.veganoutreach.com/wv/ that I'm distributing but I would love some help. Maybe we could get together and hand them out or leave them places, or I could drop some of for you at work. I really like leafletting cuz I think it's effective. It's giving people information and then letting them draw their own conclusions. I gave one to someone at work and when I got back from my trip I heard he had stopped eating meat for like 10 days so far. Whether that's true or not, he does ask questions and today he wanted to have what I was having for lunch so we went and got a veg roti together. Pretty cool. Anyhow, I'm a firm believer that the best thing we can do for the animals and the world is to keep giving information. Vegan Outreach says this " Suppose each of the current 2,000 members of Vegan Outreach influenced one person to become vegan every five years on average; and each new vegan, in turn, also influenced one new person every five years. Although the change would be imperceptible at first, by 2057 more than 15 percent of the U.S. population would be vegan, and far more suffering would have been prevented than if we abolished every other form of animal exploitation in the country. With more people accepting and living the principles of animal liberation, there would be many more vegan options for everyone (e.g., vegan burgers would be cheaper and more readily available), making it much easier for people to become vegan or vegetarian. At this pace, by 2068, the entire U.S. population would be vegan. " And that's _only_ starting with their 2000 members. There are millions of vegetarians... Also from Vegan Outreach, here are some tips for promoting veganism http://www.veganoutreach.com/advocacy/promoting.html And I was thinking that Earth Day would be a good time to leaflet. PeTA has a good pamphlet on meat-eating and the environment. And here is a site with all kinds of petitions for animals http://www.apasfa.org/peti/english.html And Farm Animal Reform Movement often has good ideas for, or even pre-written, letters at their site http://www.farmusa.org/programs/letters.html Way to go on the leather, and the letter to MAC, and for talking to your friends. That's so cool! Just one more thing, as part of your action resolution will you come out to a brunch? -anji > ok, i'm sorry to have started such a huge ruckus(how do you spell that?)..... > just to clarify, when i made a proposal to set a day each week to take action, i > was NOT referring to conducting viloent or illegal activities...i agree that it > would be dumb to talk of such plans in a public forum. > i was referring to other 'direct actions' such as writing letters to companies, > postering, legal protests, etc. which i do feel is a good idea....all i was > trying to initiate is ACTION in some way, as an alternative to doing nothing but > worrying and being frustrated. like my shrink said, all the worrying in the > world will get you nowhere....i'm sick of doing nothing..and i don't care if any > action i take has no effects...at least i'll feel better for trying. > i'm also glad that all this happened because i belive now that the topic had to > be discussed. > > anyway, my only actions to date are: > > -i have decided to never buy leather again > -i have taken part in writing a letter to mgmt. at MAC cosmetics expressing > staff's views on spokesmodels lil' kim and mary j. blige(both women are HUGE fur > advocates) and how this contradicts our image as being a cruelty free company. > -i have become much more outspoken regarding animal cruelty in an effort to > inform my friends...i'm really focusing on educating people on which companies > use animal testing. -- _____________ Free email services provided by http://www.goodkarmamail.com powered by OutBlaze
