Guest guest
Hey Katie, when I became vegan, I too didn't think I'd lose any weight, but low and behold, after only four months of being a vegan, I'd dropped 10 pounds. You need to make sure you get enough calcium (which you can get from tofu & soymilk -- try white wave silk, it's the greatest!) and vitamin D magnesium -- which helps your use the calcium. You can probably get enough vitamin D from sunlight. But if you eat a well balanced diet, you probably shouldn't have any problems. Some vegans have vitamin B12 deficiencies, but if you're a recent meat eater you probably have enough stored in your body for a year or two. Just make sure you eat something red, orange, or yellow and something green everyday and whole foods -- skip the white rice & white bread and don't forget the tofu & soymilk! Guest guest
Hey all- Everyone knows by now that I am starting out and I was wondering if any of you experienced weight loss when you made the switch to veganism. I guess I figured that vegans eat a lot of carbs which maintains weight, but I have also heard that many people lose a lot of weight. Also what vitamins would you recommend for a new vegan thanks - katie
Guest guest
I lost between 15 and 20 pounds since I was an omnivore about a year ago. I excercise a little, but I think eating vegan has helped me control my eating habits; the quality of the food I eat is way up. I find that meat and fatty foods like cheese are kind of addictive; when I ate them, I ate a lot of them. I still eat a lot (just ask Paul or Vik when they cook), but I find I don't really get carried away so often. I have this crazy (or not so crazy) idea that growth hormones in dairy and meat contribute to weight gain. In the US, I read that obesity is way up, like 50% in the last 10 years. I think the article on the cover of the Chicago Tribune that I read on the way back from Farm Sanctuary said that the number of people who are 30% over their ideal weight went from something like 1 in 8, to 1 in 5 since 1990. There is a hormone called IVF1 that causes cows to grow faster, and I believe that the hormone that Monsanto sells (called rGBH) stimulates the production of this growth hormone or something like that. Anyway, IGF1 is a very rare example of a hormone that humans share with an animal, but it is our growth hormone too! It just makes too much sense that the hormones that they give cows to grow and gain not only muscle but fat (American Beef, where RGBH is approved is known to be fattier than Canadian beef where rGHB is not approved, just ask any chef). Unlike cows, we store our fat under our skin like pigs and dolphins, not in our muscles like other mammals. Anyway, I COULD BE VERY WRONG ABOUT ALL THIS, but being a vegans, we're less susceptable to the risk that I'm right. Besides, bio-accumulation is well documented, so any chemicals used on plant food will accumulate in an animal up to 20 times, and I'll be that regulations governing pesticides and fertilizers for animal feed are more lax than the regulations for plants intended for human consumption. They are very different plants, though. I think it's important to remember that no one has grown old on a diet that includes the chemicals that they give these animals. Guest guest
Anthony- It sounds like you really know what you are talking about, or at least have done a lot of thinking about this. It always seems like guys lose weight so easily. And Im sure that going from a meat eating diet to one without has a major effect on ones body. -Katie
Guest guest
when i went totally vegan several years ago, i lost about 25 lbs. i also stopped menstruating for a few months as my body readjusted. even though i never consumed a lot of dairy products, i used to eat a whole lot more carbs when i was lacto-ovo. when i went vegan i started eating a lot more veggies, plus i cut out most processed and refined foods like white flour, white rice, white sugar, etc. but, i have to add, that since i've been vegan i've had an incredible amount of energy. i don't take any vitamin supplements, i just try te eat a variety of healthy foods, lots of veggies, tofu, green leafies, whole grains, etc. plus silk and edensoy extra are both fortified with calcium, vitamin d, and the b vitamins. (silk tastes way better, in my opinion, but edensoy is great for cooking) it took a while to get adjusted to soymilk, and i tried out several before finding a few that i liked. have a great day laura eat television for dinner you said backwards is we
