Guest guest
Here are some great books for vegetarian (or not) children and parents. I got " Herb, the Vegetarian Dragon " for my step-nephew but I wonder if his carnivorous parents have or will even read it to him. Though I'm not one for procreation, I am glad that veg*ns are raising veg*n children because I think they may be the only hope for the future of planet. Watch out for non-fiction childrens books about farm animals. Though we want them to become familiar with and develop respect for these awesome creatures, some of these books can present an idyllic picture of these animals' happy life on the farm, which we know is not nearly as common these days as the mega agribusiness intensive confinement prisons otherwise known as factory farms. Many people hang on to this pleasant image of farm life in their head to justify their continued exploitation of farm animals (even though no matter how well the animals are treated it is still exploitation and ethically wrong, but that's for another post)... Here are the books: Herb, the Vegetarian Dragon http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1902283368/ Herb, The Vegetarian Dragon is the story of how the only vegetarian dragon in the forest tries to stand up for his own values - only to find himself jailed - his very life in jeopadry - when he refuses Dragon MeatHook's offer of freedom in exchange for becoming a meat-eater like his peers. While Herb is willing and ready to be friendly with the carnivorous dragons and considerate of their ways, they are not agreeable to letting him be different. For the young reader (who does not have to embrace vegetaranism to enjoy this book) the social issue being explored in the sub-text underlying the action, is this: sometimes accepting other people means walking a thin line between appreciating them for who they are, and keeping yourself open to new ideas - while still standing up for your own values. Cooking With Herb : The Vegetarian Dragon http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/184148041X/ " With a little help from his friends Rosie-Rose, Gorse and his beloved Grand-Ma-Ma-Flora, Herb demonstrates that vegetarian food can be just as delicious as meat-based dishes. Along with recipes such as Chili Con " No " Carne, Party Pasta For A Herd Of Dragons, Herb’s amazing potatoes, Chocolate Banana Walnut Bread and sixteen others, it’s designed for kids and their parents to have fun together. " Victor, the Vegetarian : Saving Little Lambs http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0964039427/ Let us inspire our children to have compassion for the animals, with this gentle story of Victor, as he runs away with his lambs, to save their lives. He cares so much for his animal friends that he realizes he doesn't want to eat lamb chops, and " He asked his parents, 'What about all the meat we eat? I'd love all those animals if I knew them. I don't want to eat cows or pigs or chickens either!' " Victor's Picnic : With the Vegetarian Animals http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0964039478/ A deer invites Victor to a picnic, where vegetarian (vegan) animals share their food with him. Along the way, he meets two carnivores, a mountain lion and a coyote, and Victor realizes that with his short teeth and fingernails, he is NOT a carnivore. Instead, he learns what to eat to stay healthy from the rabbits and a giraffe, a cow and horses, an elephant, a gorilla, pocket mice and chipmunks, to name a few. Cows Are Vegetarians : A Book for Vegetarian Kids http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0963089307/ ....demonstrates through easy to understand language the powerful and positive reasons for being a vegetarian. It explores the choice to become a vegetarian and how this choice has an effect on the environment, the animals and health. Can help your vegetarian child understand the importance of his/her lifestyle and it explains how to deal with non-veg relatives and friends. Bob and Shirley : A Tale of Two Lobsters http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0140387927/ Two large, old lobsters are caught and put in a tank in a fish store window until some concerned humans picket the store. Based on a true story. All Pigs Are Beautiful http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1564024318/002-0958617-8812236 Charlotte's Web http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0060263857/002-0958617-8812236 -- _____________ Free email services provided by http://www.goodkarmamail.com powered by OutBlaze
