Guest guest
Hi Holiday, Regarding what to feed our pets: I received a catalog some time ago from a company called Wow Bow Distributors. They have vegetarian dog and cat food, sell supplements, etc. Now, I wanted to try this... but, the rub is that the food isn't cheap (not that I want to be a cheapskate when it comes to our fur-kids), you have to order it and then it is shipped to you (and you pay for shipping), there's no guarantee your pets will like it. I wrote a letter to the company asking for samples of their cat food (before we had dogs) and explained I had two (then) very finicky eaters and wanted them to try it first. I got no response. I wrote again. Again, no response. I gave up. Maybe I give up to easily. I thought they might be interested in my business. So, we buy Science Diet for the cats, depends on the day for the dogs. There are a couple of books available (don't know their titles right off the top of my head -- anyone??) detailing how to prepare a veggie diet for your dogs and cats yourself. I'm not so sure I'm ready to begin cooking big meals daily for both the dogs and cats, but have the feeling eventually it will come to that. For treats I sometimes stick peanut butter in their Kongs (their favorite toys) and they amuse themselves for quite a while getting it out. I also know there are lots of recipes out there for making your dogs treats like peanut butter cookies, oatmeal biscuits, and the like. Have not tried them yet, so can't tell you how well received they are. Guest guest
I do not have a cat or dog but I was at the Pangea website and looking under the title books. They do have a book on feeding cats or dogs vegan and I'm sure it offers helpful tips. It may not be the one for you, but check it out. -Katie

But it doesn't matter if they eat in the kitchen or not--you're not allowed to benefit from or own chametz on Pesach, even if you don't eat it. By feeding it to a pet, you are doing both. The dog food is more likely than the cat food to have real chametz in it, but if there are any fillers, it could be grain-based. (You are allowed to benefit from or own kitniyot--even if you don't eat them on Pesach.) As long as there's no real chametz in the pet food, it's not a problem...but the only way to really be sure is if it has a hechsher. (Or to make your own.) Our bunny (and hamsters when we had them) lived on matza instead of pellets, plus fresh vegetables. (Try a Web search for pets and passover...) I know some people sell their pets to a non-Jew for Pesach; the non-Jew feeds the animals (but they live the rest of the time in their previous home), then the previous owner buys them back at the end--plus money for the amount spent on food.
