Guest guest
Vegetarian Actor Urges Boycott of Easter Ham For Immediate Release: April 10, 2000 Albuquerque, N.M. -- As many Americans prepare to celebrate Easter with a traditional ham dinner, Babe star James Cromwell is reminding them that their " supper " was once a " someone. " Cromwell, who became a vegetarian after playing Farmer Hoggett in Babe, narrates PETA's new national TV advertisement urging viewers to have a heart-and give ham the heave-ho. The advertisement will air this week on KOAT-TV, KOB-TV, and KRQE-TV in Albuquerque. " The largest slaughterhouses kill one pig every three seconds, " Cromwell says, over heart-melting footage of adorable pigs frolicking in green fields à la Babe. Other footage in the advertisement contrasts sharply with these peaceful images. Videotape of men beating pigs with metal bars was taken by a PETA investigator who worked undercover inside a North Carolina pig-breeding facility. Far from the idyllic farmyards that Babe called home, PETA documented abuses ranging from violent beatings of pregnant sows to sawing off a conscious animal's legs. Abuses like these are routine on today's factory farms, where pigs are packed together in such small spaces that they are unable to even turn around. They are fed hormones and antibiotics to keep disease down and profits up. Their tails are chopped off, their teeth are removed with pliers, and male pigs are castrated-all without anesthesia. Finally, at the slaughterhouse, they are hung upside down and bled to death, often while fully conscious. Pleads Cromwell, " Pigs are sensitive, intelligent animals. Many animals have their throats slit or are dropped into scalding tanks while they are still alive. Please, stop eating pigs.
