Guest guest
Dozens upon dozens of baby raccoons have starved to death because of the actions of some neighbors. These neighbors do not want any wildlife around. They have already killed all the squirrels, using traps and warfarin. The woman hacks up every snake, on sight. They have killed numerous birds, including hummingbirds. The woman says that cats are not worth anything, and that dogs have the right to go onto the cat's property and kill it there. They spray every insect and weed. For the past six months, they, and some others they have recruited, have been trying to totally eradicate the raccoon population. At first, we started seeing raccoons with their tails cut off in various stages, and one that had its tail literally ripped from its body leaving a big, gaping, bloody wound. One seven-month-old had a broken front leg and could no longer run or climb trees for protection. I put some food out to try to keep them from going to the neighbors, but that didn't work. The one, that had its tail ripped off, showed up for three days in a row, for something to eat, then never showed up again. By now, they have disposed of the entire local population of raccoons. This would number 35 - 40. However, the total count is much higher. Some were just about to give birth, while many others had already given birth, meaning that dozens of baby raccoons have starved to death. As new arrivals have been coming in to fill the void, they have been meeting the same fate. Also, since it is nursing mothers that have been responding to the baiting of these beautiful animals, there are more and more babies starving to death all the time. The SPCA will not do anything. So, I need a way to put pressure on this issue to try to get it stopped. These people have lots of money and can continue this indefinitely. You should see these people after showing their " superiority " and exercising their " power " to eliminate these innocent, helpless animals. After getting rid of another one and, also, knowing that the babies are now slowly starving to death, they go out onto their deck, prepare a barbecue dinner, then go inside and watch tv. This is happening in B.C., Canada. This particular area is trying to attract tourists. I was hoping to find people, that care enough about the lives of these animals, that would email letters to the editor or opinion page of our local papers, and to our local chamber of commerce, and express their anger at such behavior, and for this being allowed to happen here. Please, if you care about the lives of these adult and baby raccoons, or even just believe that this should never happen to any animal, email the included addresses. Identify the local area where this is happening (Ship's Point), and please state that you would not visit the Comox Valley for allowing this to go on, and, also, that you will be telling others of what is happening here. This area is very sensitive to tourist money, and your response could help put some pressure and notoriety on the people responsible for this. Guest guest
This is another email that was sent regarding the starving baby raccoons. The person who has been witnessing these events can be contacted at: chomper Please feel free to contact this person for more info. Maria I wish to thank everyone for the excellent response I have received regarding my posting about the raccoons. My main issue was the welfare of the raccoons. I included the other things that had happened to try to give some perspective as to the callous disregard that I have witnessed about any form of wildlife, here, where I live. I want to elaborate on what I wrote and how I arrived at finally seeking out anyone that cared about the lives of these raccoons. I will try to make this as brief as possible, because, in actual fact, it is a long story. The things I wrote are things that I have personally witnessed and listened to. THE SQUIRRELS: When we first met those people (in the autumn), one of the very first things the guy said to me was that we didn't want any squirrels around because they would just nest in the attic and be a nuisance. I asked if they had done that at his place. He said no, but that they would. During the summer, my wife likes to sit out in the sun. We like all forms of animal life, and the next summer we started offering some food to the squirrels. We even named them. It was so enjoyable having them around. They traveled a long distance to take their food away, so had come from somewhere else in the neighborhood. One day, I heard the woman next door start yelling, " Ooh, Oh, Ooh, Ah " . This lasted for about a full half-minute until her husband finally asked what the matter was. She said that she had turned around and there was a squirrel sitting on the branch next to her, and that it had scared her. Moments later, he started walking toward the house. She asked him where he was going, and he said he was going to get the traps. A short time later, the squirrels were all disappearing. I even saw one of the traps set on their property. Then one day, he took her out to the driveway to show her a dead squirrel. I heard him tell her that there weren't any marks on it, so he must have gotten it with the warfarin. All the squirrels quit showing up. After years of having none around, I have finally heard the sounds of a lone squirrel, back in the area. I will not feed it. I hope it leaves. THE SNAKES: I have witnessed the woman hack the snakes to pieces while repeatedly telling them how much she hates them. I have personally witnessed this on three different occasions. THE BIRDS: The birds were killed indirectly. Their bird feeder always had large amounts of fungus growing in it. He would always be showing me lots of dead birds on their property. No marks on them. Every year, I showed him articles explaining that if the bird feeders were allowed to grow fungus, that it can and does compromise the birds' immune system, leading to fatalities. He shrugged it off, said he wasn't going to clean them, and if the birds were hungry enough, they would eat the food. The hummingbirds: They had feeders up. We got some, and I tried using the store-bought nectar. The hummingbirds wouldn't touch it. I asked the woman what they used. She said to just use regular sugar, mix it at 1:1 with water, and then just bring it to a boil. I did that and it attracted a lot of hummingbirds. Fortunately, I hadn't done that for long when I read that the strongest mixture should be no more than one part sugar to four parts water. I hanged the mixture immediately. In the meantime, the guy was showing me dead hummingbirds hanging in the small trees, on their property. I told him that I had read that using a mixture too strong, stronger than 1:4 sugar to water, would cause the birds' organs to harden, killing them. I gave him the article. He continued to show me more dead hummingbirds, more than a dozen in just one month, just hanging there dead. He said she likes to attract a lot of them to their feeder. I just felt that this showed the callous disregard they have for the lives of these creatures. I had been with the guy, on lots of occasions, when he would pull out the spray can whenever he saw any sign of insects or weeds. When another neighbor's dog had attempted to kill our cat, the woman made the statement to me about dogs and cats. RACCOONS: In the wintertime, IF the raccoons, wandering through the yard, looked like they weren't getting enough to eat, I would put some dog food out for them. They were terrified of thosepeople's dog, would avoid their property, (we have a fence around three sides of ours), and would run away or climb trees over any noise from their dog. Some stray cats came around to eat some food, and even they chased the raccoons away. The woman, next door, would come out to the side fence line, sometimes, in the evening, and clap her hands at them trying to scare them away. I was outside, a lot of the time, and watched her do this. The closest the raccoons were to that fence line was probably 75 feet. Then, starting this last winter, we began noticing the maimed raccoons. The closest, so-called, wildlife rescue center, that we know of, is about 30 miles away. My wife phoned them in regard to the maiming of the raccoons. She was told that there was no law preventing people from trapping and killing the raccoons. When I saw the one with the broken front leg, I phoned the same center and told them about it, describing how it would just fall over and roll, anytime it tried to run, and that it could not climb, and could hardly even walk. They told me it would do just fine, in the wild, with a broken leg. I asked if I could take it there, if I could catch it. She said, " no " , to try to find a vet here and take it to the vet, if I found one that would take it. I went to the local SPCA and asked them what kind of cages they had. They said, " Oh, you want to catch some raccoons? We don't have any cages here, but if you go to Buckerfield's, they have the cages there. You can rent one there and get rid of them. " I hadn'teven said what I wanted the cage for. They didn't even offer any guidelines - just rent the cage and get rid of them! The young raccoon disappeared before I even had a chance to catch it. In fact, they were disappearing at a fairly rapid rate. It seemed too fast for just one person to be involved. I asked the SPCA if people could just trap them whenever they want and dump them somewhere. They said yes. I emailed another rescue center, on the mainland, mentioning the maiming and taking of nursing females. They said it was legal for them to be taken. I phoned the SPCA, again, and asked what their views were on removing nursing mothers and letting the babies starve to death. They said there was no problem with that. I said, 'So, I can take the nursing mothers anytime I want, and just let the babies starve to death; there's no problem with that?' She said that they were a nuisance animal, and that, yes, I could do that. I contacted the Ministry of Environment. While two other offices had some concerns about it, I was referred to the local branch, here. After finding out that I could not stop them from being taken away, even from their babies, I said that I wasn't objecting to the removal, but to how they were being treated once they had been captured. The 'conservation officer' told me that, as far as he was concerned, people could trap them and " take them out and kill them any way they want! " Never once did he accept that it was a feeling, living being, but rather just something to discard if you didn't want it around, for whatever reason. I contacted the web site of the Humane Society. There, I learned that there are no animal cruelty laws in Canada. There was one that was suppose to be going through Parliament, but when the Prime Minister called the election, last autumn, the bill died there. It has been re-introduced, but has only gone through first reading. It has to go through three readings, which are months apart. I downloaded the bill and printed it, anyway, and posted it on a local bulletin board, where this is happening. The raccoons have continued to disappear. I have seen some in a cage, being taken from their yard, in a blue pickup, and once using a car. Our bedroom window overlooks their driveway. The last incident that I witnessed from them, was with the car. That was probably a few weeks to a month ago. But they are still disappearing. I believe I know who else has been doing this, but I cannot prove their involvement. When I did ask the SPCA what would happen if I tried to prove cruelty, they said it would be my word against theirs. I found some raw beef , left in our yard, that had obviously been chewed on by a raccoon. I suspected someone might have poisoned it. I put it in a plastic bag and called the SPCA. I told them that I thought it could be poisoned, and asked them what I could do to find out, and would they be concerned if it was. They said no, and to just phone a vet. The vet phoned a lab, but they only test for strychnine and something else. I thought it could have weed killer on it, but the lab wouldn't test for that. The meat was in my yard, so I cannot prove where it came from. One week ago, in the morning, I watched as a young raccoon walked cautiously over toward another neighbor's property. Moments later, I heard a rifle shot. I believe that there are several people involved in this, but I cannot prove their collaboration. I do not believe that several neighbors got the idea, at the same time, and started doing all this at the same time. I do not accept this as a coincidence, but the law says they can do it. The local population has been entirely eliminated. As I said in my first posting, many of them had given birth already, and by now, all of the babies have starved to death. But I have seen new arrivals show up, and return like clockwork - everyday at almost exactly the same time, for several days, then I never see them again. I spent a lot of time outside with the original population, and was able to identify them. They were so friendly toward me, and remarkably courteous to each other. That is how I arrived at requesting help. No one has cared. Everybody says it is legal that they trap and remove them, even from the babies and let them starve to death. I cannot say what their fate has been with anyone else that has been doing this. Since I can't prove the others' involvement in this, and since everybody says it's ok, I didn't know where else to turn. The people I have witnessed are very rich and elderly, and they use their money and age as weapons. Besides, the law allows it to happen. I needed some kind of leverage, and thought that if this area thought they may lose some tourism money over this, maybe somebody in the business community would put out a public plea for whomever was doing this to stop, because they were hurting the community. According to what I've been told, even though I have witnessed and heard all these things, it is only my word against theirs, and the law actually allows people to do these things. In any letters emailed to the addresses I originally provided, I would write about the raccoons being taken away, causing the babies to starve to death. I just want to embarrass the ones, responsible for this, into stopping, or maybe cause someone to put pressure on the ones still doing this, to try to get them to stop. I hope this isn't too long to be posted. Thank you, again. Guest guest
Thank you, again, for your response to my request to help put pressure on the Ship's Point area, of the Comox Valley, B.C., Canada, for targeting raccoons and destroying the lives of these beautiful, friendly animals. I know that I have not been much of a participating member, other than to ask for your help in trying to save any new mothers that arrive (since the entire local population is gone), thereby, also, helping to keep their babies alive. However, right now, the issue is to try to continue to save some of these raccoons, and that is all I'm concerned about until something has been done. After that, I hope to have better things to say. Allow me to introduce you to this area. One local newspaper chose not to participate in trying to help these animals. They have kept silent about the whole thing. Actually, considering who it was, I'm not surprised. The other local newspaper, had a brief article on page five. The next issue had slightly more, and on page three. The last issue, it was put on the front page. Thank you for helping that to happen. I, PARTICULARLY, WANT TO ADDRESS SOMETHING THAT WAS PRINTED IN THE FRONT PAGE ARTICLE. Your emails have certainly been noticed at the local chamber of commerce. That is what I wanted. However, the article says that the manager has replied to every email she has received, to let them know that animal abuse isn't reflective of the Comox Valley. That is what she is paid to do - protect the interests of the business community. However, if I had cut out all the newspaper articles, telling of animals that were mistreated, since I have lived here (nine years), I could swamp you with them. I don't want to go into details, right now, because it is unpleasant enough to just remember them, and I DON'T WANT TO TAKE THE FOCUS OFF THE RACCOONS. This is how it has turned out. One local woman (at Ship's Point) has come forward to say that, " she knows of at least two dogs that have been poisoned and died. She believes both her dog and cat, who have since died, were also poisoned. " " I don't have any pets any more - except for a bunny - because I'm too scared to, " **** said. " It's horrific. " (I don't have her permission to use her name, so I won't quote it. The above was taken directly from the news story.) I'm glad that the above was brought out into the open, and I believe it would not have been if this area hadn't started to receive some publicity. I have witnessed so many things here - even guys, when they spot a cat near the side of the road, driving right off the paved highway, onto grassed fields, trying to run over the animal as it tries to outrun their vehicle. (I've seen this several times, and Much, Much more.) BUT, AT THIS PRESENT TIME, I WANT TO TRY TO KEEP FOCUSED ON THE RACCOONS. They have been targeted by some callous, self-serving people, and need all the help they can get. That's why I resent the chamber of commerce trying to sweep this under the rug by emailing people and telling them it isn't happening here, or that it isn't reflective of this area. A MUCH BETTER SOLUTION WOULD BE FOR THEM TO PUBLICLY DEMAND THAT THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS STOP, IMMEDIATELY. Welcome to the Comox Valley, where there hasn't been one letter-to-the-editor, by anyone in this valley, showing any concern for the welfare or lives of these animals. No one has said anything in defense of these raccoons. There have been plenty of letters by people that have been upset that someone has exposed the problem. So far, the only response has been to try to silence the messenger, rather than to stop the abusive practice. I'm going to have to spend much more time, now, trying to contact anyone I can think of and as many of the contacts, as I can, that I have been given by members of the group, to try to get enough pressure put on this area, in the hopes that SOME other people in this area will start calling for the targeting of these raccoons to stop. I have been devoting all of my time to trying to find a way to get the people, responsible for this, charged with something or to just get it stopped, but so far the laws are in their favor. I'm trying to divide my time between my daily responsibilities, trying to find another property to move to (which means packing and looking at other places), and trying to get something done to help the raccoons. I remember the last holdout (less than a year old) of the local population. It used to meet its sibling in our yard absolutely every night, and they would wrestle for hours. They'd be ten feet from our window. The last evening it was here, it showed up right on time, looking for its sibling as it did every night (its sibling had been gone for a month by that time). I watched as it caught scent of the raw fish the neighbors put out to bait it to their property. I watched as I saw it leave the yard, going over to their place, knowing that I would never see it again, and not knowing what I could do to stop it. And I never did see it again. This is not a legal issue, because the laws, here, seem to give them the right to do what they are doing. This is a humane issue, and any emails you can continue to send will greatly help. Telling anyone else, that you can, about it and asking them to email, will also be a great help. Please spend the few minutes it takes to type and send an email to the addresses below. Please continue to express your feelings about the targeting of these raccoons and please state that you will not visit this area as a result and that you will continue to tell other people. Thank you very much for your help. cvrnews chamber Get personalized email addresses from Mail - only $35 a year! http://personal.mail./
