Guest guest
The vegan who came to dinner Yes, you can find ways to feed THOSE people at your next cookout By VANCE LEHMKUHL " Guess who's coming to dinner - a vegetarian. " " Oh, great. Now what do we do? " If you haven't yet found yourself on one side or the other of this exchange, you may soon, as the number of those calling themselves vegetarian continues to rise and warmer weather makes cookouts and food-related get-togethers more plentiful. http://dailynews.philly.com/content/daily_news/2001/05/30/features/FCO V30F.h
Guest guest
I wrote a letter to the paper the morning after it was printed...I felt the author was too negative..here is my unedited letter, which they printed (and butchered)2 days ago... Kudos to Vance Lehmkuhl for his " The Vegan Who Came To Dinner " article(Wed. May 30). As a vegan, I know how frustrating it is feeling like a burden as well as the odd man out when eating at non-vegan friends' and family's houses. It was good to see an informative and accomodating article such as this in a widely read, mainstream publication like the Daily News. My only(albeit small) complaint is the somewhat negative connotation with which Mr. Lehmkuhl refers to vegans, calling us " troublemakers " , " outsiders " , " those people " , and suggesting that our friends may wish to go back and change the fact that we have met, merely because we choose to live cruelty-free(or " restricted or " that way " as he so eloquently put it). This is just ridiculous. Perhaps he should have focused more on the (many) positive aspects of veganism, and not the " inconvenience " it thrusts upon our friends. One can only wonder how " convenient " it is to the millions of cows, pigs, chickens, and other innocent animals that are mindlessly slaughtered at factory farms each year. I would think that Mr. Lehmkuhl, who is vegan himself, would realize that there is already enough negative stigma attached to a lifestyle that is born out of compassion, and his cynical bashing of it won't help it gain any more acceptance.
