Is it true that animal products are the only natural source of vitamin B12, as claimed in the article? I have seen claims that B12 is also present in seaweed. Also, there is an interesting article that states that our bodies can reabsorb B12 from the bile that we excrete: http://www.living-foods.com/articles/b12issue.html I get my B12 from breakfast cereals (an artificial source of B12), but I'd be interested to know if it would be possible to get it from natural sources, mainly because I'm interested in whether my vegan diet would have been possible in the past, before artificial sources were available. Guest guest
At the risk of sounding stupid or silly, I've always been curious as to why you can only get natural B12 from animal flesh. Cows don't eat meat so where do they get THEIR B12? Humans are animals too, so why can't we get it in the same non-flesh natural way that a cow can? Guest guest
Perhaps it comes down to a question of differing physiologies. We cannot digest what a cow can. Therefore, we can't expect to get the same types of nutrients from food that a natural vegetarian (cow) is able to. --- Rhonda <veganrose wrote: > At the risk of sounding stupid or silly, I've always > been curious as to why > you can only get natural B12 from animal flesh. Guest guest
As far as I know, B12 doesn't come from the cow itself, but is produced by specific bacteria found in the animal's small intestine. I've heard experts saying that your body's B12 level depends not only on consuming B12 but consuming foods that stimulate B12 production by this bacteria. I never thought of it this way, but what you said reminded me of the argument that people NEED cow's milk because it's the only viable source of calcium for humans, apparently calcium found in vegetables is really bad (because you need vit. C to be able to digest it; go figure), but where do cows get their calcium? Anyway, there's still debate over how much B12 consumption is needed by humans, different dietetic associations have different guidelines. -Belle _______________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
