NEWS RELEASE Animal Activists Protest Callous CALAS Conference Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science to Celebrate 40th Anniversary in Toronto From July 7 to 10, members of the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science will meet at the luxurious Toronto Mariott Hotel to celebrate 40 years of hurting animals for product testing and research. Protestors from Freedom for Animals will be on hand to demand that CALAS members STOP KILLING ANIMALS: * Friday, July 6, 2001 * 6 - 7 p.m. * Marriott Hotel at the Eaton Centre * 525 Bay St. (half a block south of Dundas) According to the CALAS website ( http://www.calas-acsal.org/symposium/calastoronto.html ), the symposium attendees will be able to enjoy Toronto's fine dining and other attractions, and also practice killing animals, and other " procedures " . These and other workshops involving live animals will take place at the University of Toronto (Division of Comparative Medicine and Department of Zoology), Pfizer Canada, and the Toronto Zoo. Although the symposium programme does not detail what killing methods will be used, the following methods of rat and mouse killing are endorsed by the so-called Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC), which oversees some animal laboratories in Canada: * crushing the animal's skull * breaking the animal's neck * cutting off the animal's head * electrocution * microwaving the animal * grinding up the animal * lethal injection * gassing " It's appalling that these people will be casually killing animals as part of their 'fun and festive' weekend, " said Freedom for Animals spokesperson Rosemary Amey. " We're here to remind CALAS members that these rats and mice are individuals with feelings. " The protestors also want to raise awareness of the fact that animals are being harmed in research at the University of Toronto Department of Zoology and the Toronto Zoo. " Animal researchers like to claim that their work is medically necessary, " said Amey, " but this zoological research has no medical benefit at all.
