Guest guest
Hi. I have been a member for a couple of weeks, and a vegetarian for a long time. I have now decided to go vegan, but am having some problems. I don't like eggs or cheese, and it doesn't bother to stay away from milk and butter. However, it's reading the ingrediants constantly that is killing me. There are so many different animal-derived ingrediants, how do remember them all. Does anyone know where could find a list of basic foods that tells whether or not they or vegan? For example, can I still eat my wheat thins? What about crackers? And also, I have read that vegans can eat margarine, but that doesn't make sense to me (though I'm not sure about the difference beteween the 2, I've never eaten margarine). So, does anyone have any advice for me? Thanks so much for letting me bore you! Sandra Send your FREE holiday greetings online! http://greetings. Guest guest
Hey Sandra - PETA has a great listing of animal ingredients: http://www.peta-online.org/mall/cc/ingred.html They also have these *great* little cards you can carry around in your wallet - email or call and ask them to mail you some, get some extras for your veggie friends. Don't let it get you down when you read the labels, let it empower you, and encourage you - each time you put down a product with animal ingredients, you're taking more more step in the creation of a vegan world. It's a good thing, and you're a better person for it. =) As for margarine - i'd suggest staying away from it, it's just fat! But, if you're like me and not so much in it for the health, Earth Balance has a vegan margarine (even says VEGAN on the package!), and it's organic and non-hydrogenated. I don't think a better margarine could be made. It's a yellowish container with brick red and green writing. Should be in most healthfood stores in North America... - Dave Victoria, BC - " Sandra Coleman " <swirley2398 Tuesday, January 01, 2002 11:52 AM need some help, please. > Hi. Press (I think I got this one from PETA) Also, the following keep me motivated in being a vegan as much as I can; 'Diet for a New America' -- John Robbins 'The Food Revolution' -- John Robbins 'Vegan the New Ethics of Eating' -- Erik Marcus 'Slaughter House' -- Gail A Eisnitz 'Animal Liberation' -- Peter Singer 'Carinf Consumers' -- PETA puts a new one out every year 'Being Vegan' -- Joanne Stepaniak There is soooo many, almost too many new books out today about veganism...well I guess thats a good thing also I am on the mailing list of Robert Cohens http://www.NotMilk.com which is VERY informative about dairy products. And if you email him, he will actually email you back, unlike places like Farm Sanctuary. Thank you.
