Guest guest
By Robert Cohen www.notmilk.com ================== Tonight (Thursday, January 17, 2002), CBS Evening News will air the NOTMILK news story that the've been promoting all week. The show should be seen sometime around 6:30 PM EST. Check your local listings. Although the story has been called NOTMILK, I was not interviewed for the piece. I have been on CBS many times, and they might use old stock footage, but the way I feel, it's better to have a NOTMILK story without the NOTMILKMAN, than no story at all. I will watch with interest. One man who will appear as the NOTMILK advocate is Dr. Neal Barnard of the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine. Long before I had a clue about milk's negatives, Neal was writing and lecturing about the harmful effects of milk and dairy products. It's good to have Neal, a medical doctor, and thousands of other physicians on our side! A few years ago, my NOTMILK campaign appeared in prime time on a highly rated show. NOTMILK became the lead story on HARD COPY. After two hours of interviews, I was anxious to see what kind of segment would result after the network's sometimes-biased post production process. Minutes before the segment was to air, HARD COPY ran a Domino's Pizza ad. I knew right then and there that I was in trouble. A few minutes later, my two hours was diluted into two fifteen-second sound bites. The not-so hard hitting investigative report was biased in favor of milk producers, and ended up not offending or biting the hand that feeds TV networks. If you see similar ads before tonight's CBS segment, you'll understand the nature of television. TV stations are tempted by hundreds of millions of dollars of dairy advertising dollars each year. The tidal wave of anti-milk rhetoric continues, and each show, however tempered and biased, provides one small nail in the milk coffin. In only five years, supermarket soymilk sales have grown from one million dollars per year (1996) to over 550 million dollars (2001). Milk consumption decreases each year. We are doing something very right, and will continue to do so. Here's more evidence: Recently, the Beverage Marketing Corporation conducted a dairy survey and found that milk consumption is decreasing dramatically. They estimate that by the year 2010, per capita consumption of milk among kids ages 6-12 will be 17 gallons per year. In 2000, consumption was 26 gallons per child. Please watch the NOTMILK story, and let CBS know if you loved or hated their treatment of the milk controversy. The producer of the NOTMILK story is Kevin Finnegan and his phone number is 212-975-7486. Kevin's EMAIL address is kpf Robert Cohen http://www.notmilk.com ============ Forwarded by Vegan News Service http://www.greaterthings.com/Health/Vegan/
