Guest guest
Hey everyone, I totally agree with Isabelle and Dave in that simply because a culture has historically been oppressed as the Jews have been, it certainly does not entitle them to do as they wish with sentient animals in the name of tradition. This is a problem that has plagued anthropology since its beginnings, as people have always wondered whether it is justified to be a cultural relativist and believe that all cultures have a right to exist on their own terms or think that other cultures should be criticized for their action. The problem with judging other cultures is that it is often from a deeply biased and ethnocentric perspective, which can have some pretty devastating effect; European imperialism being the most obvious. Without sounding repetitive, I personally feel that the best solution is to adopt a utilitarian perspective, since the foundation of the philosophy (pleasure is good) can be agreed upon by all cultures. Again, this is just my opinion, I could be wrong, but the only alternative I see to this is relative morality whose adherents should not only accept traditional Jewish slaughter but also Nazism, as acceptable ethic.
