Guest guest
I'm sending this only to the Planet-Vegan mailing list (through which I received Anthony's message) and to the UK Vegan Society (to which Anthony also sent his message, and of which I am a member). Anthony Walker wrote: > " What`s that you say? Brigitte Bardot is a member of the FN? Oh, well >then, leave me please to be beaten to death, as you`re a liberal. " > > " Qu`est-ce que vous dites? " There are many good reasons to oppose Korean treatment of dogs, yet not to do so via Brigitte Bardot's petition. The choice is not between doing nothing, and taking action through Brigitte Bardot. I would urge list members independently to write a short letter of protest. The letter does not have to be long. Just one line is effective (arguably, more effective than a signature on a petition). For a list of addresses, see the following URL. I'm not associated with koreananimals.org in any way (I found them by searching on Google). http://www.koreananimals.org/help.htm#write Here are the two main reasons why I choose not to ally myself with Brigitte Bardot: 1. If there is large-scale political support for a person who supports far-right causes, this gives them greater political credibility. By extension, the other causes they support are also legitimized. I will not take action that legitimizes fascism. 2. By associating with the far-right, one allows one's political opponents to portray one as a fellow-traveller with the far-right. Imagine what would happen if a large proportion of vegans supported Brigitte Bardot's campaign. Our opponents would find it easy to (wrongly) portray the vegan movement as being allied with the far-right. Anthony, I don't believe that someone who opposes fascists is necessarily a liberal, whichever definition of 'liberal' is intended. If you mean liberal as opposed to conservative, I know many conservatives who oppose fascism. Conservatism is not fascism. Gerry
