Guest guest
EURO MPs APPROVE BAN ON ANIMAL TESING FOR COSMETICS A Europe-wide ban on the sale of cosmetics tested on animals has been approved by MEPs. If endorsed by EU government ministers, the ban will come into force at the start of 2005. It will apply to all new cosmetic products which have been tested on animals from that date. But products already on the market will be allowed to remain on sale. Any company selling items such as shampoo, lipsticks and shower gel which have been tested on animals will be affected. Ministers are warning they will accept nothing less than a complete crackdown on the unnecessary use of animals in the development of cosmetics. The vote follows years of wrangling between the European Parliament and EU governments. Liberal-Democrat MEP Chris Davies said: " If the price to be paid to end animal cruelty is that consumers do without yet another deodorant, or even bubblier bubble baths, then it is one worth paying. " It is estimated that each year in the EU, 38,000 animals are used and killed in the search for new cosmetics. Britain has banned the testing of cosmetics and their ingredients on animals since 1998. But the ban does not affect cosmetics sold in Britain but made abroad. Most European testing of cosmetics on animals is done in France and Italy. http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_605409.html?menu=
