Guest guest
Veganism Eveywhere! Hello Planet Vegan! I got back from my trip to Amsterdam and I wanted to check in. It was a fantastic trip, with beautiful flowers, canals, cobblestone streets and...lots of tourists! I was forwarned by my anti-vegan mother that it would be impossible to stay vegan abroad, she said GOOD LUCK! Its all cheese and milk! But upon arriving (and enjoying a really excellent vegan meal on the KLM flight) to our delight there were vegan options everywhere we went! Each cafe (maybe we had good luck, but it seemed unusual) had a VEGAN option right on the menu...like it would say in brackets (vegan). I was so thrilled! I wish Toronto cafes were like that! I also found organic markets and a dutch health food store where I got yummy tofutti better than cream cheese spread and soymilk. It was cool! I felt so at home. Alot of people were into vegetarianism, and I met alot of vegans. On our last night, we went to the Vrankenjuik(?) bar, and saw some bands play. Sure enough, the headliner band was a straight edge vegan band! They had '100% vegetarian youth " t-shirts on,and stickers that said Milk free! on their amps. Totally cool! It was like- Wow! Enlightened city or what? I was very happy. Anyways just one more vegan thing... When I got back, Anji and Paul invited me to come to this new Vegetarian restaurant. I kind of rolled my eyes mentally because Im TIRED of veggie burgers and sprouts...but to my surprise it was Fressen(?) this new GOURMET vegetarian restaurant. Its on Queen street (Toronto) near bathurst. The chef is a vegan, but there are cheese options for those vegetarains who think cheese is a vegetable. THE FOOD WAS AMAZING! Tres chichi foufou! The wait was too lonnnngg though, they are understaffed tuesdays and thursdays apparently so dont go then! but they just opened so I imagine they have to work out the glitches ...Anyways it was well worth it. There is even a bar in the back, where Hello! you can actually smoke. Like a REAL RESTAURANT for once. I am thrilled and am going to take my parental units there as soon as I can get a chance. Hmmmmmmm I guess Im all checked in. Sorry for rambling on, but Im just happy that there is more and more vegan/vegetarian awareness in this world. It makes me think that there is hope, and it certainly makes me feel like less of a freak and more of one of an enlightened few. Anyhew, signing out! Take it easy everyone. Guest guest
> amazon grrrl[sMTP:bliss] > I got back from my trip to Amsterdam and I wanted to check in. > It was a fantastic trip > I'm glad you enjoyed yourself and I'm really impressed to hear how vegan-friendly Amsterdam is, but then they are years ahead of us Brits in enlightened behaviour! Anyhow, what I wanted to ask was, I've heard rumours that the Dutch have actually cracked the ultimate problem of life, the universe and everything...or in other words how to make a fake hard " cheese " that behaves (and tastes!) like the real thing, with no cruelty involved anywhere! I'm told that it melts and browns if you grill it, rather than going hard and crisp like the stuff we have on sale here, and that it tastes disturbingly like the dairy sort. Now the person who told me had heard from a friend of a friend, which is hardly a reliable source, but on the other hand he has heard the same story several times, so maybe.... I don't suppose you heard/saw anything of this type, did you? If the worst comes to the worst then I shall have to go on a weekend break to Holland myself, but I thought maybe you might know. Cheers Cathy
