I though I should append a disclaimer to my comment about diabetes and

insulin. I didn't mean to suggest that people with diabetes are bad for

buying insulin made from cow pancreas. If there weren't so many cows

being slaughtered for food, insulin would be synthesized by genetically

engineered bacteria for economic reasons. While cows pancreas's are

cheap " by-products " of meat, there is no economic incentive for this

research to be completed, and thus there is no cruelty-free insulin

option that I'm aware of.

You're partially right - the increase of cases of adult onset diabetes is the

result of horrible diet. But there is another cause of the increase of diabetes

in the Western world - medicine. Sufferers of juvenile diabetes (the

genetically caused type) are receiving better health care and surviving to

reproduce, which increases the number of people carrying the responsible gene.

Not that I have a problems with this - my niece suffers from juvenile diabetes

and I will be perfectly happy to see her live a long life. This is just an

interesting fact.

there would be consequences too to creating genetically-engineered

bacteria. which would affect the animals and the planet. genetic

engineering is currently polluting plants and killing off butterflies, or

other beings that we don't know of yet. and of course there is a ripple

effect. and don't forget the crossing of species that is occurring with

genetic engineering-- who knows what could be in that g.e. bacteria.

after all, they are putting fish genes in corn, antibiotics in bananas.

(and who are the test models for g.e. products in the university

laboratories? yep-- animals.) we could be creating another monster.

furthermore, i think that one reason that diabetes is so prevalent in the

western world is through an unhealthy, highly processed diet. of course,

not all diabetes in all people is caused by this. but food-- especially

excessive amounts of refined sugar--can be a factor in the onset of

diabetes.

i am not sure what the answer is. but i do not believe we can create

compassionate change in our world by compromising any being-- including a

small bacterium.
