Short of locking them indoors until they're grown-up there was *nothing* you could have done to stop them being taken. In moving them and the adult out of the street you saved them from a potentially more ghastly fate - starving to death because their mother was under the wheels of a car. Nature is awful when you look at it closely, and experiencing that first hand is the price we pay for caring and trying to help. No-one could have done more or better than you, so try not to suffer too much. Above all, don't let it stop you from helping again! All good wishes Cathy.
