Thai Airways International said Friday it was responding to passenger concerns and a worldwide effort by conservationists to reverse the dramatic decline in the shark population. " According to recent environmental reports, some 60,000 Pacific sharks are killed every year to satisfy the human appetite for shark fin soup, considered a delicacy in Asian cuisine, " the airline said. " Other choices of dishes will be served as alternatives which are equally delicious and pose no threat to the environment. " Environmentalists warn that sharks, vital to the marine ecosystem, are headed toward extinction. They have been particularly critical of operations that catch sharks, slice off their fins and dump their bodies back in the ocean. Shark fin soup is considered a great delicacy by many Chinese, with Chinese restaurants charging high prices for the finest soup. -- ------------------------ Free email services provided by http://www.goodkarmacafe.com powered by OutBlaze
