Guest guest
June 29, 2000 Toronto, Canada .... [Andy Nash/Heather Osborn / ANN] Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman was one of the first participants in the opening meetings of the General Conference Session. Lastman welcomed Seventh-day Adventists to Toronto and encouraged them to enjoy its clean, safe streets and friendly people. " You will find Toronto to be a city of peace and serenity, " he said. " Toronto is the most culturally diverse city in the world, " Lastman continued, " and we get along -- it’s the magic of our city and of the Seventh-day Adventist church. " Toronto boasts people from 169 countries. The 11 million member Adventist Church, meanwhile, has members in 205 countries. Some 60,000 of those members (including 2,000 delegates) are expected to attend the 57th General Conference Session. Lastman also praised the church for promoting good family values and a healthy lifestyle. " You said ‘no smoking’ when everyone else thought smoking was stylish. You advocated vegetarian food while everyone else was wallowing in high cholesterol, " he commented, receiving enthusiastic applause from the audience. Lastman gave Jan Paulsen, president of the worldwide Adventist Church, and Orville Parchment, president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada, keys to the city. " They represent the key to our hearts, " said Lastman. -- ------------------------ Free email services provided by http://www.goodkarmacafe.com Powered by OutBlaze
