A Young Couple's Experience

from EVU News, Issue 3 /1998

Kosotie and Marie are a young couple who live in the south of Sweden, in a

small town called

Akarp. Kosotie is 38, and Marie is 34 years old, and they have a

16-month-old boy, Alve.

They live a good and happy life, all is well, in fact, very well with them.

Kosotie, who lived a

typical life until he was 31, realized that he had to get rid of his

asthma, allergy, cold hands, skin

problems, constipation, etc., he simply had to change his lifestyle!

Prescribed drugs didn't help

any more, so he decided to become a vegetarian. After a year, his health

seemed to improve,

although there were still problems.

Being a curious person, he turned to veganism, mostly because of ethical

reasons, as well as for the sake of his health.

A year later he didn't notice any big improvements, and his health problems

continued, and he discovered raw foods. He became a raw food vegan and

continued with this diet for over two years. It seemed to help him more

than the previous diet, and he became very interested in nutrition and

body-ecology. One day he stumbled upon a lecture on fruitarianism, and with

that additional information has continued to live for the last two years.

Now he has no asthma, no allergies, no skin problems, no constipation, and

says he feels better than ever. He continues to get rid of his old toxins,

or " old sins " as he puts it. He says to create health you have to give the

body what it was designed for. Being clean on the inside as well as the

outside is the proper way to do it. He adds that everything in the human

body points out that we are pure fruitarians. It takes millions of years

for us to evolve to changes in our environment, and we haven't done that

yet. Cooked food has only been around for some ten or twenty thousand years

what did we eat before that time? Raw food. Kosotie has started a

fruitarian organization in Sweden, with about 25 members, and it is

growing. He also works out with weightlifting and yoga.

Marie and Kosotie met four years ago. Marie had been living a rather

" normal " life, trying vegetarian foods for some time, but had made no

commitment to that diet until she met Kosotie. Love can move mountains, or

at least it can change a person! Today she lives better than ever on a

vegan diet, 90% raw foods and some daily cooked simple food for lunch and

she is moving steadily towards an " all raw " diet. So far, so good, but

that's not the end of this story. No. Their pretty baby Alve is a subject

all by himself. His health is excellent. He is very secure, in harmony with

life, stronger than most babies in the whole of Sweden! He's been breast

fed since birth and still gets this " goodie " .

At six months' age he was started on fruit juice, slowly adding more and

more to his diet. Today he eats a banana, four plums plus one or two figs

and some breast milk! Well, he is pure energy. And what about illnesses?

What about them? He hasn't had any, other than a few minor colds, or

detoxification, as they say. He hasn't been given any vaccinations, since

his parents don't believe in poisoning someone to good health, especially

not since reading about " natural hygiene " . Alve has been carried in a

babysling right from birth, either on his stomach or his back this has

given him an easy, safe and loving start in life as well as satisfaction

for the parents. Alve is strong as a monkey and is not afraid of people, as

is sometimes the case with other " normal " children. He seldom cries,

doesn't have a " runny " nose... he's just a happy, playful and superhealthy

baby.

So what's the problem? Well, Kosotie and Marie have no problems, but many

of their family have problems with their lifestyle. The local medical

establishment doesn't like their lifestyle at all. The doctors say Alve

will get serious diseases and become crippled and other nasty problems, so

his parents have stopped taking Alve to the doctor. Now it's only Marie's

parents who complain about her new lifestyle.

Kosotie and Marie have discovered a lot of the health myths that are found

in today's society, and welcome any-one who wishes to contact them for

advice, friendship, questions or help. They also have big plans to move to

Spain and set up a health center, or maybe even a community, but that's a

whole other story. They invite everyone to feel free to write them for

information.

I just wanted to add my testimony for raw food to this story. My husband

and daughter and I lived on all raw for 2 1/2 years from the time our daughter

was a toddler until she was in school. At that point, she was curious about

what she was seeing the other kids with, and needed to try those things. We

took back some cooked foods at that point. Now our daughter is turning 17 this

month, and she like Alve, has been one of the healthiest kids of her generation.

This is VERY different than the way it was for her father and I who were

frequently and seriously sick when we were growing up. We also had trouble with

the medical system over it, and when the public health nurse found out that we

were feeding our young daughter only raw foods, she insisted that I submit to an

" inquisition " under the implied threat that we might have her taken from us

otherwise. It was one of the scariest times of my life, but thankfully, we

passed their scrutiny. It took about 3 weeks of presenting all my dietary

records and enduring hours of questions about how and why I thought raw food was

acceptable as a diet.

Just for the sake of balance, one might also want to take a look at

www.beyondveg.com. The site appears to have some articles on the whole

raw-food issue. It seems to be somewhat biased against raw-food diets and

veganism and such, but still maybe worth taking a look at.

Hi Clark;

I had a look at the site you recommended beyondveg. I agree with the one

author who suggested that raw food diet may be best suited to the tropics. I

found that in the 2 1/2 years that my family and I ate all raw, our body

temperatures were so much lower that we were cold all the time in our cool, damp

long winters on the west coast of Canada. The reality of living where we do

seems to require some internal heating!

I think there are 2 common sources of " failure to thrive " (FTT) on vegan

diet: one lack of B12. I have the impression that many people eating vegan or

vegetarian diets are not aware of the need to take, or not taking enough B12.

It is often stated that " some vegans seem to need it " , and I think this leads

many to think that it's " not me " . My impression is that B12 becomes a issue for

all people as they age, that much more so for vegans and/or vegetarians.

I think the other common source of FTT is intolerance to wheat products

and/or gluten, a protein found in abundance in wheat and its relatives (spelt,

kamut, tricicale, rye, barley). Years ago, it was thought to be quite rare, and

the statistics were 1 in 2,000 people affected by it. Gradually the numbers

have climbed to 1 in 500, then 1 in 250. At the moment, the numbers are 1 in

150 people having obvious symptoms of gluten intolerance, with 2 to 4 more

having the intolerance without showing obvious symptoms. www.celiac.com

Over time, if the intolerance is not identified, it can increase and cause

of many of the typical FTT problems with a vegan or vegetarian diet. Anyone,

even people who eat meat, can be affected by gluten intolerance, but it can be

that much more critical an issue for vegans or vegetarians who replace animal

products with gluten-loaded food items such as imitation " meats " based on

gluten, certain vegetarian burgers, breads and pastas.

I think intolerance to gluten may be one reason why so many people improve

in health when they eat all raw, because raw diets rarely contain any gluten. I

have heard very little about people eating a gluten-free vegan diet as I do, so

I think this is an area that requires further investigation, especially when

" failure to thrive " becomes an issue.

I also had a look at VeganVoice. Congratulations on your new site Clark...

it is looking good!
